Kay: U.S. Must Explain Iraq WMD Research

Mon Jan 26,12:40 AM ET

By SCOTT LINDLAW, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - U.S. intelligence agencies need to explain why their research indicated Iraq (news - web sites) possessed banned weapons before the American-led invasion, says the outgoing top U.S. inspector, who now believes Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) had no such arms.

"I don't think they exist," David Kay said Sunday. "The fact that we found so far the weapons do not exist — we've got to deal with that difference and understand why."

Kay's remarks on National Public Radio reignited criticism from Democrats, who ignored his cautions that the failure to find weapons of mass destruction was "not a political issue."

"It's an issue of the capabilities of one's intelligence service to collect valid, truthful information," Kay said. Asked whether President Bush (news - web sites) owed the nation an explanation for the gap between his warnings and Kay's findings, Kay said: "I actually think the intelligence community owes the president, rather than the president owing the American people."

Is this an ally-oop to the CIA to slam dunk Bush and Cheney for putting pressure on the CIA to cook the intelligence???

1. "US intelligence agencies need to explain why their research indicated"
Edited on Mon Jan-26-04 01:27 PM by JeebusH
'cause the President told them that their research better say that?

2. I believe that prior to the war the CIA was on record saying
that the weapons of mass destruction as alluded to repeatedly by the Chimp and his administration did not exist.

8. Okay, now I'm really confused.
In this article, Kay says that Iraq WMD were sent to Syria for safekeeping.

9. Misleading headline
From the link you posted -
" David Kay, the former head of the coalition's hunt for Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, yesterday claimed that part of Saddam Hussein's secret weapons programme was hidden in Syria."

That's "part" of a "program", not WMD.

Bad headline.

12. So....Let's see if I have this right. Saddam is getting the shit
blown out of his cities and his country is being invaded, right? What does he do? Of course! Let's move all my most effective weapons to fucking SYRIA!

That's gotta be the stupidest theory I've ever heard in my life. If your ass is on the line, you use what you have to save it. Not using WMDs when he had a chance means that he didn't fucking have any to use.

Sent them to Syria, indeed.

14. What about his Plan B?-hide in an hole until they leave
You are right that is a big leap to take.

Remember that one of the first reasons the WH gave for not finding WMD was that Saddam hadn't used them/hid them to embarass Bush......let THAT one sink in for a while. That's equivalent of pulling down someone's gym shorts in high school-hahaha everyone look at George!

19. It's the same person
saying that Iraq never had WMD, and then turning around and saying that Iraq did have WMD, but sent them to Syria. Does this guy really know anything ?

18. But according to Conda-sleaze-a Rice, Iraq did NOT send WMD to Syria.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,1280,-3606884,00.html

The United States has no credible evidence that Iraq moved weapons of mass destruction into Syria early last year before the U.S.-led war that drove Saddam Hussein from power, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice said Friday.

Rice said, ``Any indication that something like that happened would be a very serious matter.

``But I want to be very clear: we don't, at this point, have any indications that I would consider credible and firm that that has taken place, but we will tie down every lead,'' she said at a White House briefing about Bush's trip Monday to a hemispheric summit in Mexico.

But what would you expect from the Telegraph, which is a rightwing Hollinger paper?

10. Yes, ball is in the CIA's court but notice how "intelligence" is to blame
That is the entire intelligence apparatus-CIA,NSA,DIA and something that many 'Murkans would be surprised to find out about-the OSP.

"Intelligence agencies have told me that......." a common refrain by W but it doesn't say who said what. The CIA could very easily come out and say "We tried to tell him several times that we weren't sure...." as in the October 2002 speech in Cincinnati were the yellowcake home run ball was pulled out of the speech and the CIA repeatedly had to stop him from making claims they couldn't or wouldn't substantiate.

Also remember that some of this is trying to weaken the "inteligence" community to set up a plausible excuse/excuses for 9/11 failings.

16. It's simple
The NeoCons are not going to come out and publicly state: "It had nothing to with WMD, SH or terrorism. We killed over 8,000 Iraqi citizens and 500 young Americans because we want to plunder the 2nd richest oil reserves in the world".

Isn't it easier to put the blame on a bunch of guys wearing suits and dark shades?

And sadly, I think probably over 50% of Americans believe what they are told by corporate media.

Rummy gave the OK for U.S. companies to supply them to Iraq in the 1980s; Rummy didn't object to their use against Iran; and the U.S. simply assumed that they still existed.

edit because I hit the wrong number -- 1980s, not 1970s
