Strong explosions heard in central Baghdad, sirens from green zone
Strong explosions heard in central Baghdad, sirens from green zone

Monday, January 26, 2004

(01-26) 12:05 PST BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) --

Strong explosions shook the center of Baghdad late Monday, and sirens could be heard from the U.S.-controlled area known as the "green zone."

Three explosions occurred about 10:35 p.m., followed by sirens and a recorded message from the green zone loud speakers to "take cover."

A coalition spokesman said at least one rocket exploded near the helicopter landing zone about 200 yards from the Republican Palace, used by administrator L. Paul Bremer and senior coalition staff.

It was not immediately clear precisely where the other blasts occurred or whether there was any damage or casualties.

2. Citizens celebrating the occupation, no doubt
Is it an anniversary of some kind? No big deal. Lots of folks in my neighborhood set off firecrackers on the 4th of July. Some of them make really loud noises that could be described as "strong explosions."

just said TWO LOUD EXPLOSIONS IN CENTRAL BAGHDAD..just now... No damage or injuries... and then smiled and went on with the Jacko-news or the Dean-scream news..

It's amazing how they can instantaneously assess damage , a half a world away..:)

Seven Iraqi Police Killed in Attacks

By ROBERT H. REID, Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Insurgents fired a rocket at the headquarters of the U.S.-led coalition Monday night after gunmen killed seven Iraqi policemen in a pair of attacks west of Baghdad. A senior Iraqi official blamed al-Qaida for many of the suicide bombings around the country in recent weeks.

In the north, military divers searched the muddy waters of the Tigris River for three missing U.S. soldiers, including two pilots of an OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter that crashed Sunday in Mosul during rescue operations after a patrol boat capsized.

Strong explosions reverberated through the heart of this troubled capital about 10:35 p.m., followed by sirens and a recorded message warning those in the coalition headquarters compound known as the green zone to "take cover."
<snip>
The attack on the green zone took place a day after the seven policemen were slain in two separate attacks at checkpoints around the city of Ramadi, 70 miles west of Baghdad in the Sunni Triangle, a center of resistance to the U.S.-run occupation. Iraqi police who reported the attacks made no mention of any insurgent casualties. ...
