Today's Windows Virus - MyDoom / Novarg
(Slashdot.org headline. I hope that's ok here, mods...)

Posted by timothy on Monday January 26, @07:37PM
from the are-you-virus-capable dept.

Oddster writes "There is a new virus out by the name of Novarg which can infect all Windows versions from 95 to XP. It has two interesting features - first, in addition to mass mailing, it also distributes itself via the P2P network Kazaa. Second, it can perform a denial-of-service against www.sco.com. Details at Symantec and F-Secure, although neither seems to have finished their analysis." Other readers have sent in links to coverage at CNET and Security Response, and Russ Nelson provides a sample message.

9. Not the way this one works.
I got nailed because it came to me from a familiar volunteer address. I'm just glad it wasn't one that completely destroys your HD! It doesn't help that the damned thing comes in a zip-file which means Norton doesn't catch it until you actually open it.

5. But you just know someone will ask:
"Please pass the mustard," at the next birthday party. :eyes:

People, if you want to avoid this problem quickly, download the Knoppix CD to get running on Linux:

I use Xandros (although it not free):

12. Is it true what they say about xandros ?
They hype it like it will replace sliced bread but are there not really bugs, glitches and incompatibility issues with it?

8. MyDoom attacks sco.org? WTF?
Who attacks SCO? Who even knows SCO exists? An ex-employee with a grudge, perhaps, or a lawsuit-maddened Linux developer. Gaaa. Talk about your obscure DDOS attacks...

11. Also spreads by clicking the attachment sent in an email.

I've gotten about 20 of them so far this morning. It is kinda "obscure" that it's targeting SCO. Perhaps the lawsuit they've filed about the Unix code? Hmmmm....But really, how many average people would know anything about SCO or this lawsuit or care?
