(Reuters) - Connecticut lawmakers voted unanimously on Monday to set up a panel to investigate whether to launch an impeachment probe of embattled Gov. John Rowland after he accepted gifts and free work from state contractors and lied about it.
The Connecticut House of Representatives voted 140-0 to begin an investigation of the Republican governor, whose popularity with voters has plunged to the lowest point since he first took office in 1995.

The governor, whose administration is also the focus of a federal corruption investigation, has so far refused to leave office, prompting lawmakers to set in motion the constitutional process that could lead to his ouster.
Monday's vote established a 10-member committee responsible for determining whether sufficient grounds exist to impeach Rowland. The panel has until April 14 to decide, although some members are already saying that is not enough time.
