A DELEGATION of United States congressmen entered uncharted diplomatic territory yesterday - a meeting with Libyan leader Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi.
The meeting took place in a white tent decorated with a design of palm trees and circles, erected beside the ruins of the house where Col Gaddafi’s adopted daughter was killed by bombs dropped by US warplanes in 1986.
The two nations have come a long way since then. In recent months, Col Gaddafi has renounced his support for terrorist organisations and invited US, British and United Nations experts to dismantle his previously secret programmes to develop weapons of mass destruction.
While the Americans said the meeting produced no new pledges, the very fact that it occurred was a hallmark of dramatically improving relations between the countries that until months ago saw each other as pariah states.
