'I trust the Clintons will do the right thing' Barack Obama says

Tom Baldwin in Washington

Hillary Clinton is waiting to take her final bow on the stage of the Democratic nomination contest, even though the lights are dimming and the audience is eager for the next show to begin. Barack Obama, the presumptive winner of the 15-month saga, is impatient for the curtain to fall. Tomorrow he will hold a rally in St Paul, Minnesota — where the Republicans hold their nominating convention this autumn — to demonstrate how he is already taking the fight to John McCain.

“I think that Senator Clinton and former President Clinton love this country. They love the Democratic Party,” Mr Obama said over the weekend. “I think they deeply believe that Democrats need to win in November. And so I trust that they're going to do the right thing.” Aides suggest that he may declare victory even without a formal concession from Mrs Clinton. “He's not going to wait by the phone like a high-school girl waiting for a date,” said one. “That's not Barack Obama.”

His spokesman, Robert Gibbs, said yesterday: “I think sometime this week we'll probably have a nominee for the Democratic Party and we can get talking about the need to bring change to this country.”

On Saturday there was one more spasm of fractiousness as Clinton supporters made voluble protests against a party rules committee decision to give delegates from disputed primaries in Florida and Michigan half a vote each at the Democratic convention in Denver. This gave her a net gain of 26.5 votes, barely enough to make a dent in Mr Obama's forbidding delegate lead.

1. Obama's major flaw
is that he doesn't seem to realize that Clinton is batshit insane.

2. It would be discourteous of him to mention it
But that doesn't mean he doesn't realize it.

33. Exactly.
If she weren't batshit insane maybe he would seriously consider having her on the ticket.

But she is and he isn't.

He's a smart guy. There is no need to offend any Clinton supporters. This is a clever move, putting down the gauntlet of them to get in line, but linking that with their integrity and their commitment to the Party.

"Of course they will do the right thing this week. Anything else would mean they are a pair of hapless hillbillies only concerned about themselves, and we know that's not true, right?"

35. It's an insult to hillbillies and poor whites as well as the people some
refer to as trailer trash to lump them in with the Clintons.

37. It is.
And I don't mean any offense to them. But as a practical matter, none of them will see that post. By definition, if they are wired, they aren't a hillbilly -- at least not to the degree that I am thinking.

But really, the Clintons are so disgusting because they don't have to be this way. To some degree, the circumstances of the lowest demographic limit what they are capable of. But there is really no excuse for the Clintons.

performance by some of her supporters at the RBC meeting.

6. Actually, I think he is completely aware...
...but too much of a gentleman and a diplomat to point it out.

Obama is NOT stupid or naive. If Clinton's staff and supporters are hostile now, when he is treating her in such a conciliatory manner, how do you think they'd be if he were more bluntly honest about her delusions?

22. You are damn right he knows it. But he knows he is better off to let the rain just run down his
back. He knows that summer will have it's flied and there is just no use to complain about it. It gets you no where. So he puts a smile on his face, and deals with it. He is truly a class act.

25. I did not have a dog in this fight after Edward dropped out. But then I noticed that HRC threw
every detestable thing in the book at Obama, and he just kept on smiling. I thought to myself, DAMN, this guy is a hell of a lot better and bigger than me.

He won me over. It's called class, and I try to be classy, but this guy has it down.

26. Edwards is a good man.
I feel pretty confident that he'd be AG or have some other significant role in an Obama administration, where his passion and considerable talents will be put to very good use.

As for Obama winning you over, I'm glad he did -- and I believe that in the next five months, he'll win over a landslide majority of this nation's voting population. :)

10. He knows it. That's why he's treating Hillary like a mental patient
Obama has to be extremely careful how he treats Clinton. Hillary looks as if she can burn down the house. (And deny that she did so.)

31. Now THAT'S funny!

Best laugh I've had all week.

Oh, Obama, you are so naive. Better not be that naive when picking your SS Guards, IF the Bushies allow you to ascend the Throne of Amerika. If you leave any Bushie Loyalists in your Praetoriasn Guard, then you are in the gravest danger, sir, from those who are supposed to be guarding you and their Bushie Masters who will tell them where and when to let that guard down.

Sadly, I strongly suspect you may be naive enough to do just that.

Not unlike what the Bushies did on 9/11, only you'll be the WTC. Take heed, sir.

38. Trust, But Verify -- It's Nuclear Disarmament
Obama needs to require that Hillary Clinton's concession be signed by Hillary and Bill, in blood (theirs) and notarized before a Supreme Court Justice (not one of the infamously intellectually bankrupt five) before agreeing to help her retire her campaign debt, with the caveat that if she or he (or any of their surrogates) say one nasty word about Obama (or his wife) during the general election campaign, that the Clintons will forfeit to Obama all their future book royalties and speaking fees (and those of Bill's foundation). That might justify trust.
