India tops world murder count
Source: Times of India

Jun 2008, 0050 hrs IST,TNN

NEW DELHI: India has earned the dubious distinction of being the country where maximum number of murders takes place in the world, three times more than its neighbour Pakistan and double the figures in United States.

There were more than 50 lakh incidents of crime reported in 2007-08 which included murder, rape and drug offences, a government report said. There were 32,719 incidents of murder recorded in India, whereas there were 16,692 in the US and 9,631 in Pakistan, the report compiled by National Crime Records Bureau and released by the Union Home Ministry, said.

India was followed by South Africa which registered 30,960 incidents of murders. Austria had recorded just 148 murders, whereas Israel registered 177 such incidents.

Snip~ ""Most of the murders take place due to passion, sudden provocation, crime related and family disputes,’’ Delhi police spokesman ACP Rajan Bhagat said. Delhi has recorded an increase of 1.08% in murders in 2007 compared to 2006."

I was quite stunned to come across this.

7. Brazil, however, takes the cake among big countries. 48,000.

The OP article seems to be poorly researched.

19. Brazil has terrible poverty and a very violent drug slum in Rio.
I'm not sure if the majority of violence is traceable to the Rio Slum, but it's one of those places (not unlike South Central), where the police don't go unless they have assault rifles, body armor and helicopter support. The gangs in this area are heavily armed and hostile. There are also many kidnappings for ransom.

that isn't really "statistics". that's called "counting." anyway, let's just say i'd bet my life, liberty, and (if i had one) immortal soul that the northern hemisphere has *far* more murders than the southern hemisphere. damn that murderous northern hemisphere!!!!!!11

14. and they actually don't lead in murder, the article has some facts wrong
and if you go by population percentage they are far behind many nations.

so gun control is a good thing.

18. Maybe they're reporting crimes more often
I also wouldn't doubt the economic growth has something to do with. Poverty is still high. People are hungry while some are gaining wealth. Expect it grow worse.

They have three times out population. We have 16,000 murders per year with 300,000,000. That's 5.3 per 100,000 per year.

They have 32,000 murders per year with 900,000,000. That's 3.6 per 100,000 per year. And we rank 24th worldwide.

<on edit>

And what the hell kind of numbering system do they use there, anyway?

The US topped the crime list with 2,31,13,708 total crime related incidents, whereas India registered overall 50,26,337 criminal cases

Are there digits missing in the numbers? Comma misplacement? :wtf:

21. I'm thinking it's screwy comma placement
Edited on Sun Jun-01-08 11:35 PM by Zevon fan
if it's missing digits then that would lead us to believe the US has over twenty three million or perhaps even two billion crime related incidents a year...That seems highly unlikely, heh.

23. As an Indian American I could explain
Edited on Mon Jun-02-08 12:12 AM by nyy1998
India had come up with this number system long before anyone else did, so instead of "thousands" and "million" they use "crore" and "lakhs", I personally find it wierd but that's because I grew witht he western numbering system but no the comma placement are not a mistake.
This should also help explain:

28. It says fifty lakh
and a lakh is a hundred thousand. Is that where the numbers get screwy? I took my meds a half hour ago and am not even going attempt the math.

Edited on Mon Jun-02-08 07:48 AM by nyy1998
India switches over at that point and go with 2 numbers per comma after that...On a side note, someone mentioned the computer engineers, they also know the western system as well(it doesn't take a genius to figure that one out!) so they can still handle the programming and the math as well.

24. This doesn't suprise me,
whenever I visit India, especially to my native province of Bihar(keep in mind, I was born and raised here in the US) I am scared out of my mind becuas eof all the kidnapping and murders there, I'd rather be in the worst nieghborhoods in the US then in parts of India. Murders here in the US will still make the front page, murders in India barely get a paragraph sometimes.
