O'Neill Stands by Bush Criticism in Book

O'Neill Stands by Bush Criticism in Book
Tue Jan 27, 4:22 AM ET By MARTIN CRUTSINGER, AP Economics Writer

WASHINGTON - Former Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill says he stands behind his criticism of the inner workings of the Bush administration, but regrets that some of his "vivid language" is detracting from serious issues he wants to discuss.

O'Neill said in an interview with The Associated Press that despite the criticism leveled out him by the administration and its supporters, he has gotten a lot of support from ordinary people since the book, "The Price of Loyalty," was published two weeks ago.
"One person walked up to me on Lexington Avenue in New York and said, 'This is a real profile in courage,'" O'Neill said.

The book, written by Ron Suskind, paints an unflattering portrait of President Bush as a disengaged chief executive in a White House where Vice President Dick Cheney and the political team wielded the real power. <snip>

The book reveals that the administration from the very beginning was looking for ways to remove Iraqi President Saddam Hussein from power, long before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. O'Neill, who served on the National Security Council, also said that he never saw any convincing evidence that Iraq (news - web sites) possessed weapons of mass destruction. <snip>

O'Neill said he was currently working on a project to bring drinking water to the thousands of villages in Africa that do not have access to clean water and that he believes Bono will join him in the effort.

2. Unfortunately....
the mainstreem media does not belive O'Neill...if they did then they would have to actually do some investigating and they are thoroughly tired of doing that from 8 years of Clinton!

6. I don't think it is doing very well
It hasn't shown up on the NYT bestsellers list but then that isn't really based only on sales but on interest too. It's is a bit subjective. I found it hard to believe that it wasn't on there the week it was released given the attention it got....for that one week.

The press has it's foot on that books throat IMHO. This could be an effort to reinvigorate sales.

11. NYTimes bestseller list: FYI
There's an 11-day lag between when the list is compiled (on a Wednesday afternoon) and when it appears in the Sunday NY Times Book Review bestseller list.

Since the list compilation is based on the previous week's sales, that means that after a new book gets released, the earliest it could appear on the printed bestseller list is nearly three weeks after its debut.

9. Thanks KsKiska
With the exception of Pete Rose' book the top 5 best sellers appear to be anti-bushco! A good sign, I hope!

10. Nobody even mentions Bar Bush's book
It came out in October and after a few TV interviews, it sank like a rock. I guess even the Freeps didn't buy that turkey.

12. If you think that book is bad....
you should see the one entitled "The Perfect Wife" about Laura aka Stepford Bush! Oh my Goddess! If you take away the glossy pictures, the 20 pages of acknowledgments, etc. and the large font type the book is printed in, you end up with perhaps a biography of 75 small pages. But then I guess it would take a very skillful person to try to enlarge her life into something interesting.

16. The Perfect Wife has a lot of dirt
on what a bad mother Laura Bush is and how shallow and spoiled the twins are. There've been a lot of excerpts from it, and I saw the author on Cspan. If it's as short as you say, I guess we've seen it all. I've noticed how the author changes her slant on the Bushes, depending on who she's talking to. She sucks up if it's someone on Faux, but on other programs, she's critical of Laura.

13. I read her book - no, don't buy it
I was stunned at her arrogance and her lack of information - very high opinion of herself and her family which I expected. This woman very much thinks she is "entitled" and thinks her family is also.

17. that is why I do not like her very much
she latched onto George and has been freeloading ever since, contributing nothing but birthing a double zygote. For this she thinks she is a princess. :eyes:

Laura Bush is no innocent, sweet little dear who somehow got caught up in a terrible predicament. This woman is an opportunist and not an innocent sweet little woman who needs to be "defended" Uh uh--she is rather dumb, and is indeed the personification of the Stepford confusing and confused wife. Laura is the Joker smiling woman doing what she is told and glad to hell that SOMEONE is telling her what to do~~!!!

20. The First Freeloader
Y'know, for a librarian, has she done JACK to promote literacy, or reading to children, or drumming up support for local community libraries...anything?

I know there's no "official" job description or expectations of the First Lady...but wouldn't you think she'd champion some cause?

At least Nancy taught us to just say no.

going to loan it to some of my Pug friends when I finish. After all it is written by a Pug. i am talking about the Paul O'Neill book not the Laura Bush one. I wouldn't want anyone to think I'd buy that. Next on my list is the Kevin Phillips' expose.

19. Books exposing bush lies
four out of the top five best sellers? Amazing. And who says bush cannot be beat! The interest certainly seems to be there - that must be why they started trotting out the 9/11 brilliant crisis manager Rudy. When things get hot, change the subject.

22. I am nearly finished reading it,...
,...and I am far, far more impressed than I imagined I would be. This book deserves to be #1 because it is not only informative but pulls the reader into "that" world. O'Neill seems a genuine "honest broker" with integrity and adherence to the power of logical problem-solving. He also appears quite sincered about his interest in serving the greater public interest. I would think that Republicans respect and admire this man as a admirable model of their party. Whereas, I would also think that they would view the Bush cabal as a terribly destructive force to the integrity of all Republicans. I mean, hell, this administration makes the whole Republican party look like a bunch of deceptive, war-mongering, calculating, corporate leeches that sell their souls all for the love of money. I know Republicans that are by far more honorable than that!!!
