Justice Dept. Finds No Patriot Act Abuse
!

By CURT ANDERSON, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - A Justice Department investigation into possible civil rights and civil liberties abuses under the anti-terrorism USA Patriot Act found no abuses but a few instances of mistreatment of Muslim and Arab people, mainly at U.S. prisons, according to a report released Tuesday.

Among the 1,266 recent civil rights and civil liberties complaints received between June 14 and Dec. 15, 2003, only 17 involved Justice employees and merited a full investigation, according to the report by Glenn A. Fine, the department's inspector general.<snip>

Congress required the inspector general to investigate possible civil rights and civil liberties abuses directed against Muslims, Arabs and others as part of the Patriot Act, passed after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks that expanded the government's anti-terrorism investigatory powers.

The report found no civil rights or civil liberties abuses specifically related to the Patriot Act, which allows more phone taps, expanded search powers and other surveillance techniques. <snip>

2. Right! Ant the NYSE is capable of self-regulation.
I have a bridge in Brooklyn if anyone is interested.

I don't think ASSKKKroft would know a civil liberties violation if it bit him in the ass. He follows his own rules.

7. Unfortunately, the courts do not agree...
From the NYTimes.com

WASHINGTON, Jan. 26 — For the first time, a federal judge has struck down part of the sweeping antiterrorism law known as the USA Patriot Act, joining other courts that have challenged integral parts of the Bush administration's campaign against terrorism.

In Los Angeles, the judge, Audrey B. Collins of Federal District Court, said in a decision made public on Monday that a provision in the law banning certain types of support for terrorist groups was so vague that it risked running afoul of the First Amendment.

Civil liberties advocates hailed the decision as an important victory in efforts to rein in what they regard as legal abuses in the government's antiterrorism initiatives. The Justice Department defended the law as a crucial tool in the fight against terrorists and promised to review the Los Angeles ruling.

8. But would Antonin Scalia agree with such a finding?
Edited on Tue Jan-27-04 01:32 PM by Bandit
We all know (because he told us) that he (and every other right-winger) is/are completely impartial. The Patriot Act allows all the abuse that was complained about so how could it be abuse if it is allowed. catch 22 The question should be if we didn't have the Patriot Act would this then be unconstitutional abuse?

16. But the patriot act
is needed to find those dastardly evildoers. After all, 27 terrorist cells have been rolled up since 9/11. But don't tell anyone that 25 cells were rolled up prior to that date, way before there was a patriot act - they might call us on it and then where would we be. Lets just do our best to keep everyone in a perpetual fear mode instead.
