US tells conference most funding to deal with climate change should come from private sector

BONN, Germany (AP) - Technologies needed by developing countries to grapple with climate change will increasingly come from private companies and venture capital, the United States told a key global warming conference Tuesday.

. . .

Kaisa Kosonen, a climate campaigner for the Greenpeace environment group, called the U.S. presentation «disappointing,» even though the positions were unsurprising. «It doesn't recognize the role of industrialized countries to help developing countries,» she said.

Coal and Oil industries, on the other hand, NEED the multi-billion dollar giveaways which make up the US Energy Bill.

US representatives at the meeting made a power point presentation saying that the reason there is a problem is that developing countries have put up barriers protecting their natural resources from private investment, effectively turning the meeting focus from climate change to one of privatization.

1. More of the same BS. All we need to do is transfer oil subsidies to renewables and conservation.
We'd see a sudden and dramatic shift in our energy system.

2. Oh my
:argh:

I hope the rest of the developed world lets us stew in our own juices when "venture capital" fails to save us from this mess of our own making.

3. Two things:

1. Corporations and affiliated businesses can't and won't be motivated to fund such ventures. It's counterproductive to the needs of the shareholders.

2. The rest of us are tapped for money to invest wholesale due to the declining dollar, stagnant wages, job insecurity, inflation across the board, etc.

There is no money in the private sector that remotely comes close to achieving any goal.

4. BigOil/BigCoal are very much aware of those reasons
and are counting on them to keep non-carbon based solutions out of their very profitable market.

5. I agree!
Start with Exxon, say about 30% of their after tax profits. That would be a good start.
