Top US diplomat says Colombian rebels have sought refuge in Venezuela
The Associated Press
Published: June 3, 2008

MEDELLIN, Colombia: A top U.S. diplomat says "there's no doubt" Colombian rebels have sought refuge in Venezuela.

John Negroponte was responding to a reporter's question Monday at a meeting of the hemisphere's foreign ministers in Medellin, Colombia. Negroponte is the No. 2 official in the U.S. State Department.

Venezuela's government denies giving refuge to the revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.

Negroponte's language is mild compared to recent statements by U.S. President George W. Bush accusing Venezuela of collaborating with and giving sanctuary to the FARC.

Venezuelan foreign minister says Negroponte has "criminal record"
Jun 3, 2008, 17:48 GMT

Medellin, Colombia - Venezuelan Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro attacked US Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte on Tuesday, calling him a 'petty official with a criminal record.'

At the annual meeting of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) in the Colombian city of Medellin, Maduro accused Negroponte of being 'responsible for disappearances, for tortures and for deaths in Central America and in several parts of the world.'

He further termed him a 'character of the worst kind.'

Maduro was reacting to comments by Negroponte, who on Monday called upon Venezuela to actively combat the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) that 'have sought sanctuary' in its territory.

Maduro accused Negroponte of seeking to 'drive the wedge of intrigue' at the Medellin gathering and to determine the agenda of the meeting.

Venezuela says U.S. trying to spread violence

MEDELLIN, Colombia (Reuters) - Venezuela on Tuesday accused the United States of trying to spread violence in the Andean region after a U.S. official said left-wing Colombian rebels were hiding in Venezuelan territory.

Colombia and the United States have long said Venezuela is not doing enough to combat Marxist FARC fighters waging Latin America's longest insurgency. The rebels are also deeply involved in drug trafficking.

Deputy U.S. Secretary of State John Negroponte on Monday urged Venezuela to crack down on rebels hiding on its side of the border.

7. Death, destruction, chaos to our hemisphere. It's been done to death, hasn't it?
Unfortunately, it was done in such a sneaky, furtive, dishonest way, we didn't start finding out about it until decades after it happened, and often through declassified documents.

Now the whole world is waking up to what has been happening in Central and South American, and the Caribbean, at the hands of U.S. right-wing Presidents who apparently have sold their souls to the industrial-military complex, just the way Dwight D. Eisenhower warned it would happen if the nation didn't come to its senses quickly.

8. This is John "Bloodfinger" Negroponte talking?
Not enough salt in a dump truck to take what he's saying seriously. And the proof is when he says "there's no doubt." Bloodfinger needs to stand before a Hague tribunal and give some answers before being shipped off to prison for the rest of his natural life.

10. I would like to think Negroponte will be an unemployed "top US diplomat" next year
if there is any hope of a Democrat in the White House. There is enough of his sordid background since the Raygun daze.
