WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Robert Byrd, who at 90 is the oldest member of the U.S. Senate, was released from a hospital on Thursday after three days of treatment for a mild infection, his spokesman said.

"Senator Byrd will complete the course of his antibiotic treatment as prescribed by his doctors at his home and is expected to return to his official Senate duties upon his doctors' approval," said spokesman Jesse Jacobs.

Byrd, the longest serving senator ever who was first elected in 1958, was admitted to the hospital on Monday night with a fever after he appeared sluggish.

Jacobs said he was released "following antibiotic treatment and medical monitoring for a mild infection."

2. I just called his office.
Ths staffer said he was chomping at the bit to get back to work. That sounds just like him, so he must be feeling much better.

I told her I thought he might prefer taking it easy and checking up on his email. We both laughed out loud. Senator Byrd is quite an old school traditionalist, and works hard to reply to all constituent inquiries via snail mail. But you'll never catch him sitting at a PC picking up email.

3. I don't know how well they do in the wild once they've been in captivity so long.
Oh, sorry.

I read that wrong.

6. An infection will do that. I'm glad his doctors were careful.
I wonder if it was a UTI--those can cause some nasty side effects sometimes.

I hope he gets some good rest, too.

14. From the discussion I had with his staffer, he's not planning on resting much.
Characteristically, he's anxious to get back to work.

15. Hmm. That's not good.
His body's fighting something and needs to rest to do it. That's why he was knocked for a loop and ended up in the hospital. Isn't there someone who can have his back in the Senate for awhile, someone he could mentor?

10. Just e-mailed him! I love Senator Byrd. I will never forget his courageous
stand against the Iraq War, when he stood almost alone on the Senate floor giving the most eloquent speech I have ever heard. Of course the Bushista dismissed him and obviously so did the majority of the Senate. He and we have been proven the ones who were on the right side of the issue. History will remember him as a true patriot!
