Indian firms not among world's most ethical cos
Source: Times of India

5 Jun 2008, 2210 hrs IST,PTI

NEW YORK: Indian companies may be making it big on global arena on parameters like brand value and scale of business, but when it comes to being ethical none of them have managed to make the grade.

In the latest annual list of 93 world's most ethical companies compiled jointly by US-based magazines Ethisphere and Forbes, not a single Indian company finds mention

Incidentally, there were two Indian companies Tata Group and Hindustan Lever in the last year's list. However, none of them could make it in the 2008 list.

HLL's Dutch parent Unilever has, however, made a mark in this year's rankings.

1. India has made enormous strides since they reduced the bureaucracy.
Amercan companies are among the world's most ethical - American companies dominate the list of the most ethical companies (basis: last year - this year not available yet.)

Ask the Indonesians working in their factories.

Same goes for The Gap.

5. Good Points...
Makes one wonder who the hell decides which companies are ethical.

9. Greed ...
Perhaps their definition of ethical is giving their shareholders good returns.

11. How do they rate ethics?
I worked for Pitney Bowes and was actually let go shortly after training for following their suggestion and politely asking for extra training.

Our class was supposed to be three weeks, due to the Thanksgiving holiday we lost a week of training and they threw us on the floor... our entire class felt overwhelmed and discussed this during lunch of the second day on the floor because there was so many screens to remember. So I politely asked for a training refresher to help us understand it a little better...

They gave us a refresher and then when I got home they called and told me I was being let go because I was "stirring up the rest of the class and causing panic". It sucked because it was right before Christmas and was an incredibly rude way of saying, "we do things this way and either you deal with it or get out".

They had a lady come in and tell us if we didn't cross sell enough items we would be fired quickly as well. We thought she sounded pretty damn strict and seemed to be eager to push us with fear.

I also know half of my class was fired (let go, whatever) within two weeks because of issues remembering everything. To me that's a waste of employees to do it that way but whatever.

I also know of many other people who were let go for other reasons (including being out sick with a doctor's excuse) and PB has always just gotten away with it.

The person on the end of the phone when you call to refill your postage meter might be ethical but the people running the show are completely unprofessional.

17. There are only two on that list I would agree with
Patagonia and New Balance.

Koch Industries dumped 39 tons of benzene into the air and water, how in the f can they EVER be considered ethical?

3. Tata Consulting
Rips off their own US-based employees. They have their employees send their tax returns to Tata without letting them know that the money is the employees' to keep.

I worked directly with TCS, and their managers were liars and thieves.

6. Now there's a shocker! The globalists are falling all over themselves to make money, then this?!
Helloooo? We may (and do) have a corporate liar's culture but we have enforceable contract laws. Moving over to China temporarily, there's a reason China lost their commanding position centuries ago, among other reasons, they never developed a trustworthy economic structure -- business plans cannot be based on the "cheating model". (How many cats and dogs died from Menu Foods? To the American consumer, sure you can have your choice of 30-odd varieties of dogfood, of course they're all made by Menu Foods. Feel like a jackass, now?) India likewise.

We need to slow down these globalist piranhas. It took us decades/centuries to build up the legal and health-regulatory structure to protect the consumer. The blindered elitopath globalists can't give a damn, they won't be using their own products anyway.

I have to say it was the best job I ever had.
