McCain defends position on Florida measures
Source: AP

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Republican John McCain faced tough questions Thursday about why he opposed a measure to restore the Everglades that had broad support from Florida officials, including Republican Gov. Charlie Crist and GOP Sen. Mel Martinez.

McCain said he couldn't support the Everglades measure because it was part of a massive, pork-barrel spending bill last year.

But the Arizona senator said he would have supported the measure on its own. He planned a tour of the Everglades on Friday.

"I am committed to saving the Everglades," McCain insisted to a convention of Florida newspaper editors. "I will do whatever is necessary to do so, and I have made that clear to the rest of the delegation."

3. McCain is so screwed. He sold his soul to the devil to get the nomination

He has tied his hands. He can't campaign against the interests that allowed him the nomination, so he can't defend himself against the VERY unpopular policies the American people want changed.

His is going to LOSE.

Lose. Lose. Lose.

And, he will LOSE BIG.

Couldn't happen to a better guy!

5. His answer for everything he opposes
"...he would have supported the measure on its own."

With that mindset it would take a semi with a 40ft trailer to take any bills from the Capital building to the White House, for McCain to sign.

7. I recently read
that pythons are a growing problem in the everglades, introduced by former python owners who couldn't handle them. If he does tour the everglades, and hope he gets to see a hungry one.

8. Would have supported restoration "on its own?"
That's a laugh! Earmarks don't actually increase the federal budget. What they do is skim funding off the top of existing line items, resulting in a skewed and smaller budgets for other programs. So if McCain would have favored a separate line item for Everglades restoration, it would have still cost the same and affected other programs since overall discretionary funding is effectively capped by the Office of Management & Budget. He's scrambling for cover but there's nowhere to hide.
