California Files Lawsuit Against Whole Foods, Avalon, and Others ...
Source: Organic Consumers Association

OAKLAND, CA - Reacting in part to a study released by the Organic Consumers Association (OCA) in March of this year, but also based on their own testing, the Attorney General of California has filed a major lawsuit against body care household-cleaning product companies whose products recently tested highest for the carcinogenic contaminant 1,4-Dioxane.

Under California's "Proposition 65" consumer products that contain toxic levels of 1,4 Dioxane must have warning labels stating they may cause cancer. 1,4-Dioxane is typically produced as a byproduct when ingredients are ethoxylated with the petrochemical ethylene oxide, a process which has become standard practice for many cleansing and moisturizing products.

The suit, California v. Avalon Natural Products (manufacturer of the Alba brand), also names Whole Foods Market California (manufacturer of the Whole Foods 365 brand), Beaumont Products (manufacturer of the Citrus Magic brand), and Nutribiotic (read full Attorney General suit here). It is unclear exactly which products manufactured by the aforementioned companies triggered the lawsuit, but all named companies have sold products that tested close to or in excess of 20 parts per million for 1,4-Dioxane in the OCA study released at the Natural Products Expo in Anaheim, CA in March (read study results here).

3. 'truth in labeling' runs into 'marketing' and loses, again....
in the end, hype is hype....

trust it if you grew it, made it, took care of it, and know exactly what has been involved...

otherwise, well, you can assume you are being 'marketed'...

6. Organic Consumers Association Is a Crucial Resource
I don't know if you were aware of what was happening in 1998, but the FDA/USDA tried to weaken organic standards in the drive to create a national slate of what was acceptable. There was a HUGE consumer backlash, like nothing the Feds had ever seen. More letters were sent to Washington in protest than any other issue in history.

That was when the corps started to realize how much money potential is in the market and they've been trying to continually weaken the standards ever since.

OCA lets consumers know the score when Whole Foods won't.

7. Organic Consumers is my pet charitable donation.
They're not just into the organic issues, but also about genetically-modified foods, truth in food labeling and a whole host of health-related issues. I hit DU periodically at fund-raiser time, but I'm on auto-donate for Organic Consumers.

9. Whole Foods is Anti-Union
All progressives should rethink their shopping routines at anti-union grocery stores like Whole Foods and Walmart. These companies are counter-intuitive to the basic tenets of the Progressive ideal. Check out this link I randomly found by a simple google search:

Remember to shop Union grocery stores, you'll actually be helping to strengthen Blue collar jobs.
Thank You!!
