Red Cross Is Fined For Blood Violations
Source: Washington Post

Federal regulators said yesterday that they have fined the American Red Cross $1.7 million for continued failures to adequately manage the nation's blood supply.

The Red Cross, a charity based in the District that administers nearly half the U.S. blood supply, washed six units of red blood cells using the wrong saline solution, according to a review by the Food and Drug Administration.

The blood cells, which measure about six pints, were transfused to three patients in 2006 and last year at chapters in the Northeast and Southeast. Red Cross executives said that the violations did not endanger patients and that no adverse effects have been reported.

...

FDA spokeswoman Peper Long said, "People shouldn't panic about the safety of the blood supply."

1. Libby Dole made the Red Cross a for profit organization.
The head gets like $400,000 a year. Profit above our nations' needs and safety. We have been panic about our blood supply but there is little over sight by our agencies. It is on purpose.

They changed and ruined our agencies by under funding them and moving the "boxes around".

Once again Bush did a criminal thing and yet is not impeached.

2. The American Red Cross is also laying off 800+
people (all paid positions) this summer, mostly from the National Headquarters and their regional service centers. I don't have a link but learned this first hand from a long time contact at their national convention in March.

6. If it's a for-profit organization it would explain their insistent tactics once
you become a donor. It's like you owe them money. They never stop calling you to try to get you in to continue donating.

3. The Canadian Red Cross issued a similar statement
a few years ago. A few thousand lives Billions in compensation, the Canadian Red Cross is no longer in the Blood Biz.
When I hear statements such as..."People shouldn't panic about the safety of the blood supply." I would suggest people not panic, but demand full accountability.
