(Louisiana) Bill defies federal ID requirements
Source: The Advocate

Legislation that would direct a state department to ignore a federal mandate requiring a special identification card could end up restricting where Louisiana residents can go.

The Senate Committee of Judiciary A approved the legislation without objection Tuesday despite concerns that residents may have to buy passports to travel inside the states and to enter federal buildings.

House Bill 715 directs the state Department of Public Safety & Corrections not to implement the federal REAL ID Act of 2005.

Created after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, REAL ID is a law that establishes minimum standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and personal identification cards, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Web site.

1. What's worse is they want to give themselves a 300% pay raise....

Another measure authored by State Senator Ann Duplessis (D-New Orleans) calls for a full time legislature and a 300% boost in legislative pay. It does not make sense to make legislators, who already have plenty of time for trivial bills, to work full time. They do enough damage in three months, passing laws that are unneeded and creating state designations for almost everything, including cocktails.

2. It's not at all a trivial bill -- it is an important attempt to sidetrack a national ID card.
More power to LA's Judiciary Committee; and let's hope the bill somehow passes.

Bills like this are needed in EVERY state.

3. I was asked for my passport in order to buy Sudafed.
A perfectly legal non-prescription drug. My passport.

4. Given the problem with Meth, I am surprise you did not need two references.
Sudafed can be processed into Meth, and thus the crack down on people buying it.

6. I know that.
Legalize drugs, remove the profit, and I can go back to buying a safe and legal decongestant. Did they think I was going to corrupt 8 million people with 48 little red pills? They've already limited the amount I can buy, changed the packaging I can buy it in, made me sign a register AND NOW THEY WANT MY FUCKING PASSPORT???? WTF is the matter with them?
