Newman's spokesman, Jeff Sanderson, issued a one-line statement late Tuesday.

Artistic directors of Connecticut's Westport Country Playhouse cited unspecified health issues when they announced last month that the 83-year-old screen legend would not direct "Of Mice and Men" this fall.

Newman lives in Westport with his wife, Joanne Woodward.

7. I liked him best in Slap Shot
I'm a sucker for a guy in a hockey uniform-except those Hanson brothers.

I always liked it that he and Joanne Woodward had a marriage that withstood all the Hollywood crap.

3. Bless him
He's done so many good things for humanity when he didn't have to do a damned thing. He's one of the good folk.

4. wow... I hate to say it, but he looks to have declined a bit from the last time I saw him
which was in road to perdition. I hope his health maintains for a good while yet. It is strange to think of him as an old man especially as many of his "contemporaries" were much younger than him.
I guess we all get old sometime, but given his long and distinguished career whatever time he has left he can consider icing on the cake (not the phrase I wanted to use, but the only one I could think of)

8. Well, he is 83
Though the decline may be due to chemo or something else therapeutic.

9. it's the cancer and treatment for sure
even in older age he still was in good shape.he seems to have lost a lot of weight there. it doesn't appear to look good, but still hoping for the best.

12. A delightfully tongue-in-cheek comment from Newman.
It could mean everything, or nothing.

He doesn't look good, even for an 83-year-old, but it seems his brain
cells aren't diminished.

Long life to him.
