Legislative pay raise approved in state Senate
Source: Gannett

BATON ROUGE State senators Tuesday approved a pay raise tripling legislative salaries with the justification that the current salary isn't enough to attract average citizens to run for office.

Except for author Sen. Ann Duplessis, D-New Orleans, explaining amendments that decreased the additional funds lawmakers would have received in expense accounts, the Senate approved SB672 20-16 with no discussion or comments.

The bill would pay average legislators about $50,700 a year and up to $70,000 for legislative leaders. They would also receive the current rate of additional pay for time spent in sessions and an office allowance, not the doubling that Duplessis originally had in her bill. With the extra expense money, another $18,000 to $21,000 could be added on top of the salary.

In an e-mail message, Gov. Bobby Jindal said he "strongly disagrees with this pay increase." However, his press secretary said he would not veto the bill if the House approves it, too.

1. They have done such a wonderful job of overseeing
the building and maintenance of the N.O. levee system over the decades that they deserve a raise.

3. Does Louisana meet full or part time?

I see they only meet 6 months out of the year.

IMO the pay hike is too much.

4. Public service is not a full time career.
It has been raised to be like little Lords to be above those they represent. I think LA has turned Republican after Katrina.

5. Your on your own has been true since Reagan.
Reagan who went to public school, etc. He profited off the government system of being governor and then President. He destroyed everything for everyone else. He and Margaret Thatcher the Neo Con crazies that they were. They got "theirs".
