Fox News calls Michelle Obama "Obama's Baby Mama"
Source: Salon.com

un. 12, 2008 | An alert reader wrote in just a little while ago to let us know about something he'd spotted on Fox News Wednesday afternoon. During a segment discussing conservative attacks against Michelle Obama, the wife of presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama, the network described the former as "Obama's baby mama."

I checked, and sure enough, as you can see below, our e-mailer was right. In fact, that description was displayed on screen several times during the segment, which featured anchor Megyn Kelly and conservative blogger Michelle Malkin, an FNC contributor.

Sons of bitches. Could this be any more blatantly bigoted and racist? A "Baby Mama" is someone that has a child outside of a committed relationship. How long have the Obamas been MARRIED? And for anyone who wants to dismiss this, do you really think they'd ever call Cindy "McCain's Baby Mama"?

Un-F*cking-belieable.

216. they'd have to prove actual malice
because the Obamas are public figures... and fux can always say "we were just joking... like we joke about everything else repugnant that we put on the air and get our nipps caught in the wringer over".

I hope Olberman calls them on this isht tonight.

If they want to play like that, then perhaps it's time to write the companies which bought ad time on that show and tell them that their company and products are now personna non grata.

I agree. Fox is out of control. I ran across a wonderful article that made me feel vindicated, and these articles seem few and far between. http://www.expressmilwaukee.com/article-2567-the-trashing-of-michelle.html. For anyone who wants to read something eloquent that addresses the "baby mama" and the "terrorist fist jab" for the ludicrousness (is that a word?) that it is.

74. Thanks for the link
Dear fox “news”,

Michelle Obama is Senator Obama’s WIFE. To refer to her as his Baby Mama as you did in the link below is incredibly insulting, misleading and demeaning. If it had come out of my 11 year old son’s mouth, I’d have washed it out with soap.

You need to apologize to the Senator and his family (again) or lose whatever shred of credibility you have left.

Sincerely,

Kristin

I know! Let's talk about a terrorist Fist Bump from Obama's Baby Mama!!! That ought to seal your stupidity on the filth your network spews. Thanks to the internet, I didn't have to tune your crap in on my television. And trust me, even the most conservative conservatives in my family tune you twits out. Way to make your 'news' channel look more like 'The Globe".

A new record low set by Fox; I didn't think it was possible.

Dear Fox News:
I recently saw a news segment on your network while I was getting my oil changed. In it,you referred to Michelle Obama as Barack's "Baby Momma".Your racist tone in that remark was HIGHLY offense.Barack and Michelle have been happily married for years and have two beautiful children that were conceived in wedlock. How offensive. Are you going to refer to Cindy McCain as the whore who dated John while he was still married to his first wife(who was crippled by a car accident while he was a POW)?I didn't think so.I will be writing your sponsors next. How Un-American...you rival Joseph Goebbels when it comes to hate speech and propaganda.

This is really crazy considering how long the Obama's have been married...
and even more ridiculous when you think about the horror that is McCain's marriage...everything from the way it started to the fact the he called her the "c" word in public.

During the 90s, the news networks owned and operated by conservatives were falling over each other people how liberal they are.

Yes, the owners and editors are all conservatives. They're the people who control the media outlet. But more worker bee reporters voted for Clinton, therefore the media must be liberal. If you believe this, how can you possibly convince someone to the contrary.

Anyone want to take bets on how many milliseconds she'll be on air before saying something equally offensive, if not more so? She'll probably show up for her first broadcast in a hood.

There should be a grassroots effort to get Fox's broadcast network license pulled. That's easier to do than directly attacking the cable network cuz the FCC has more oversight with the broadcast side. No need to worry about The Simpsons, Family Guy, 24, House, etc. They'll find a home.

35. Hooray for Faux Noise!
HOLD THE FLAMES fer a second...there is a reason I gave them that hooray:
I heard on the radio today that the WORST possible thing the republican media could do would be to go after Michelle Obama. If they did, it would be an incredibly stupid thing for them to do politically! The person who made this statement was a Washington insider talking to Ed Shultz. He claimed that if the republican media, (rush, hannity, medved, o-liely, faux noise and etc.), went after Michelle Obama it would actually anger women voters and likely bring in quite a few more votes to Senator Obama's camp.

I think that this person may be right. We can see what a strong woman Michelle Obama is, she won't be too bothered I suspect, by the racist blatherings of these asshats...I suspect she and her husband will be smiling all the way to the White House.-(a thought which now has me smiling!) I think that America is starting to see the repuke media as the propaganda spewers that they truly are. I think it may benefit us all in the long run when We The People get to see the right wing screamers blatantly spewing such obvious filth. Let the Nazi's hoist themselves on their own petard publically. I ain't sayin we shouldn't take action against them when they do this, (call yer congressmen!), but I am pointing out that these storm clouds may indeed have a silver lining.

On a sorta' related note:
Did anyone notice how Bill O'liely made it atop Kieth Olberman's 'BEST Person in the World' list the other night? Because of O'liely's rants about Olberman and MSNBC, Countdown with K.O.'s ratings have recently edged out the Oliely's own ratings. That bit of irony was not lost on Olberman, which was why O'liely got the dubious accolade.

ratings. Ratings are counted by way of those who have a Nielson box in their home. Unless the DU folks watching FOX are doing so with a Nielson box attached to their TV, they are not doing anything to help FOX's ratings.

We do need to keep track of what the enemy is doing, so we can counter it as much as possible. I personally could never bear to watch FOX news, but I am grateful for those who subject themselves to it in order to alert us to outrages like this one so we can make suitable noise about it.

One reason the Republicans have had so much success in changing the public perception and mood is that they watch everything that one of our people says and scream as loudly as possible when it doesn't please them. We have to make it as hot for media mouthpieces as they do, or else the media mouths will always obey their demands, not ours.

71. I didn't realize that...
"A 'Baby Mama' is someone that has a child outside of a committed relationship."

When I first saw that I thought it was kinda cute, if not more than a little dumb. I wondered what the outrage was about. I had never heard that definition before. Frankly, I had never heard that phrase before. OK, so now I get it.

I have a feeling that whoever said it/phrased it for the video crawler had never heard that definition either. It might just be dumb, not nefarious. Although it's Fox, so it's probably both.

104. Yet most people are probably familiar with the term through the recent movie
which featured on two white women.

I've heard the term used in reference to Brittney Spears and K. Fed, Nicole Richie and her SO, so it's a race-neutral term pretty much as of present day.

235. Same here.
And you're not the only one.

Apparently in the black community, as well as in Jamaica, the word still has all its negative connotations (or slutty connotations) since the "unwedded" bit is still present in the meaning.

Outside those communities, the word, and it's male analog, apparently shifted meanings to just mean "mother of one's kids" (|| father of one's kids). So Federline was Britney Spear's baby-daddy, even though they were married at conception and birth.

96. Interestingly enough, yes
Here's the CNN copy of the transcript, November 2, 2004:

BLITZER: Barack Obama, a lot of Democrats have a lot of hope in this young man.

GREENFIELD: Well, I must say that, you know, in an era when conventions are scripted to the nines and you go to conventions because you sort of have to go, every once in a while somebody gets up and does something that absolutely blows the place apart.

And I think when Obama began to speak the sign for me of a really great speaker, as a retired speech writer, is not when people jump up and yell. They always do that. They'll jump up and yell for the phone book. When he quieted the crowd down as he told his story and the story of America this guy is a compelling figure.

BLITZER: Was he the first president of the Harvard Law Review?

WATSON: First African American president of the Harvard Law Review.

BLITZER: That's what I meant.

KING: He's made it. I think he's coming.

WATSON: He's coming up.

BLITZER: We can take a look. Maybe he will and maybe he won't but she looks like she's about to introduce him. Let's listen in.

MICHELLE OBAMA, WIFE OF BARACK OBAMA: My baby's daddy Barack Obama. Yeah!

BARACK OBAMA, SENATOR-ELECT, ILLINOIS: Thank you, Illinois. Thank you. Thank you, Illinois. I don't know about you but I'm still fired up. I am fired up. Look at this crowd. Thank you, Illinois.

98. I think there is a problem of
context. For one Michelle Obama to introduce her husband as her "babies' daddy" if true, is it not?" There's a cuteness factor to that-I can almost picture her saying it with that beautiful smile of hers. I actually have no clue if she made this comment or not, but am simply stating I see no problem with this statement...

However, with Fox's comment, they are purposely using nefarious language AND that damned bitch Malkin (I refuse to use her first name, as she shares the same one as me), I might add. Anyone with half a brain knows that there is not a shred of "cuteness" to it at all, but that the racist connotations are obviously there.

I called YOU hypersensitive.
It's called reading.
Uh oh, now I'm being a bitch. Oops, I'm being sexist against myself. I better stop before you accuse me of really being a French man named Michel or something.

Michelle Malkin is disgusting, I will say it again. She and the other cretin beings like her (Dr. Laura and Ann Coulter quickly come to mind) will trash talk anyone under the sun and you want to nitpick ME because I called her a bitch? I think you missed the point.

And no, FYI, no teacher I ever had suggested using what you call misogynistic terms (or what others call the adoption of the language of the oppressor, which I tend to prefer). So, you can relax before jumping to the insane conclusion that all of my teachers were horrible. Chill out.

Edit: Now, enough of this. You can have the last word if you want it, so long as you don't anonymously assassinate my character. I'm tired of arguing with someone I don't even know.

109. LOL. Well, the egregious part of this is that it wasn't even an "partisan editorializer" like Malkin

I'm not too offended or shocked, though. I knew that as soon as a black person became the nominee, FOX and the right-wing would try to create and exploit racial tension.

In reality, it suits their purposes that the less people know about what's going on in government the better for them--!!!

Comcast --- our carrier --- actually changed all of our channels just days before the 04 election!!!

146. I don't care if "Michelle said it first!"....
For all the "She's the one who said it, why can't they say it?" crowd which, thankfully, there doesn't seem to be too many... Did Michelle refer Barack as "My baby daddy"? Yeah, it appears that she did. In jest, with no intent to be insulting to him or herself.

People, people, people... Do I have to go through the list of things black folks can say to/about each other that other folks are not allowed to say--or, more accurately, stuff that, if other folks do say it as they have a clear constitutional right to, might still get them cracked in the mouth regardless of granted constitutional privilege?

Naw, I won't go that route as it'll seem it's a double standard (which it is that you violate at your own peril). Let me put it like this. Sometimes when I forget stuff I say to myself "You're such a moron". If I'm with friends on occasion when I get annoyed with myself they'll sometimes jokingly agree, "Yeah, you are kind of a dumbass". I chuckle at them and tell them to shut the hell up and move on with my day.

Here's the thing. Could you imagine what my response would be if some prick I don't know just randomly decides to call me a name or insult me? My first comment would likely be "Excuse you?" as I like to do sometimes and then it's likely our conversation would be all down hill, though terribly "colorful", from there. Why? One, they're not trying to be funny, they are actually trying to demean me. Two, they don't know me like that and they're out of line for sticking their nose in.

I don't care if Michelle said it. Michelle was making a joke. Michelle was trying to be funny (and it kinda was). Michelle was in no way trying to demean herself or her husband. Their supporters were a crowd that perceived it as being "cute" because they had no desire to insult or demean them either.

There is no doubt that Fox News thought it was being funny here, the question is who were they trying to amuse and what kind of mentality and way of thinking were they trying to appeal to with this joke? By the by, if this little graphic was a simple reference to a comment Michelle had made of course they explained the context of their joke, letting everyone know why they decided to call her that as opposed to just throwing that out there for kicks... Right?

187. Maybe I was over-reading it....
but there is a big difference between calling him, "My Baby Daddy", and "My Baby's Daddy". The first is a slang comment, much like what Faux News did. Calling him "My Baby's Daddy" (which is the way I read the transcript) refers to a truth...that Obama is their childrens daddy. So those who say that she started that is incorrect. Which is really irrelevant anyway, since a reputable "news" source should never stoop to this level of speaking and pass it off as "reporting". Upon seeing the video, I thought I was seeing the E!!!! network.

236. Open your mind.
Language change happens. And once it happens, scrap the etymological fallacy.

I'm not ruling out a shift in meaning as the term crossed dialects, but a modicum of sanity and good will teaches us to be on the look-out for semantic changes. There have been a fair number of words that changed meaning as they left AAEV and entered NBC English and vice-versa.

==========================================
http://www.slate.com/id/2141083/
The Oxford English Dictionary defines baby-daddy as "the father of a woman's child, who is not her husband or (in most cases) her current or exclusive partner." The baby-mama entry follows the same template with the genders reversed. But some gossip writers have been adopting the first part of the definition and ignoring the second. Salon recently called Tom Cruise "Katie Holmes' baby-daddy," even though the couple is engaged. And Gawker refers to Keven Federline as "Britney Spears' baby-daddy," even though the couple has been married for more than a year. ...

These days, the terms no longer seem "chiefly African-American"—they're everywhere, the latest bits of hip-hop lingo to gain widespread use. Baby-daddy is the new bling. Online, you can buy "Jesus is my baby-daddy" magnets, tote bags, and beer steins. There is a drink called the "babymama." Scott Hoffman, the bassist for the glam rock band the Scissors Sisters, goes by the stage name "Babydaddy." Some of this cultural paraphernalia retains the old, loaded sense of the term: You can, for example, download a "Salty Baby Mama" ringtone so that when people call, your phone will jangle and thrum while a woman's voice says, "Baby, I know you hear this damn phone ringing. I'm going to beat your ass, as soon as I see you." But just as often, the connotations are strictly biological. Baby-mama has even made inroads in Japan, where it's being used on a Web site that appears to sell strollers.

Who knows why these terms became catchphrases? Perhaps it's just that they're metrically pleasing: Baby-mama and baby-daddy are undeniably fun to say. But it's the novelty factor that explains how the words lost their negative connotations. Sure, there are many gossip writers who still use the terms in their original senses (calling dancer Carlos Leon "Madonna's baby-daddy," for example) because they're useful, reducing a complex chain of possessives—Madonna's daughter's father—to a nice, comprehensible noun. But it seems there are also plenty of writers who just like the way the words sound and don't care much about the stigma once attached to babydaddyhood. When news came last week that Anna Nicole Smith may be pregnant, it was no surprise that bloggers immediately began speculating about the identity of the "baby daddy." It may be a long time before you hear a quaint, old-fashioned "Who's the dad?"

174. Expected tactic
Well WHO didn't see this coming?

One of their main tactics will be to make the Obamas look as BLACK as possible, to scare off those of limited intellect (you know, the ones who hate because of race). I've often seen comments from conservatives such as "Voters will face the choice between a black man and a white man." This is how they'd like to frame the race, since they cannot win by promoting the attributes of McCain.

This is why they made such a big deal out of the "terrorist fist jab," because they see it as a way to make the Obamas into gangstas or something.

More will surely follow. You can bet on it.

If we were to even MENTION Cindy's past drug addiction on a major news show they would be outraged.

183. Subtle racism? Perhaps not, but it was certainly intended with vicious malice! .
I had never herd that phrase until now (I'm TV-free), but here's the Wiki on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_Mama_(film) Fortunately, we now have an "UPPITY" candidate, who'll respond appropriately and timely.

Presume that Michelle Malkin is African-American and therefore these comments can't be considered racist . . . ??? Oh, yeah?

202. Michelle is Filipino
and that's exactly the point...fox used it's token non-white non-blond anchorwoman to put their ugly racist crap out there...she's just a face so that ignorant people will say "oh it's coming from a person of color so it can't be racist!" Uhmm why do you think every mainstream news station has at least one brown face on the payroll?

205. SOOOO going to backfire on them
do they not realize that with these condenscending, out of touch comments and references to Black cultural are going to turn off every single not-racist person in America? (And that's kinda a lot of us).
Fox will turn into a regional news channel that only shows in the Appalacia market. haha

with a stereotype about people in Appalachia?

249. My email
My word! It's been a busy couple of weeks for your network's inexcusable behavior. First, the "joking" about assassinating a presidential candidate; which is completely out of line for professionals on a news network. Second, E.D. Hill's tasteless comment about a greeting used by athletes the world over as a "terrorist fist bump" to describe an interaction between Michelle and Barack Obama. Now this banner on your network:

"Outraged Liberals: Stop Picking on Obama's Baby Mama"

Here's some news. Decent people of every political stripe find your endless racially-tinged and derogatory commentary about Barack Obama and his family to be completely outside the realm of civilized behavior. It's more in keeping with the kinds of comments one would hear at a Klan rally. Therefore, give up the pretense of being "fair and balanced" and dress your anchors in their bedsheets so they can scream "White Power" while dancing around a burning cross. Since wearing bedsheets and dancing around a burning cross is not advisable anywhere near Fox headquarters in New York City, I suggest you load up your beamers with your newly-acquired Confederate flag and Swastika emblems and head off for whatever trailer park is currently hosting the latest KKK and Aryan Nation festival.

I will be sure to alert the corporate sponsors on your news cable shows that I will not patronize or buy products from companies that advertise on Fox. Enough.

250. I am betting that Fake News will be using the n-word by October.
Of course they will be only be reporting that someone else said it, like Michael Savage, and they will just report it like the good journalist they are.

251. exactly!
they will claim, "middle America is afraid to say it - but most white people are admitting they think the N-word when they see Barack or Michelle Obama, and we're going to discuss that tonight on Fox & Friends!"

BLECK! they shouldn't even be on tv, nor get to use the name, "news". They lie.

254. Wow
Gotta give it to them, thats fox...
Ok here goes, im sure ill suffer this in the future here. Im a republican, maybe not for the reasons most people would think but, this is shit, this is Fox, and ive watched their programming before, I dont think ive ever seen a more unprofessional group of people on a public network before. Ive personally met some of their ex-staff and ive heard even wilder stories, but please dont think that the majority of Rep's are this way. They must be ethically challenged for one, but, agh god. Thanks Fox... Smeared shit on your face again.

261. Utterly vile.
The sexism didn't stop with Sen. Clinton. Next target? Michelle Obama. It won't stop until we MAKE it stop.

And the racism? They're just gearing up for the onslaught!

It's gonna get worse before it gets better.
