Tornado Kills 2, Damages K-State
Source: Associated Press

CHAPMAN, Kan. (AP) -- At least two people were killed late Wednesday when a line of tornadoes cut a diagonal swath across Kansas, destroying much of the small town of Chapman and causing extensive damage on the Kansas State University campus.

Sharon Watson, spokeswoman for the Kansas Adjutant General's Department, said one victim was a woman found outside in a yard in Chapman, in Dickinson County, and the other was a man found outside a mobile home in the Jackson County town of Soldier.

The most extensive damage from the tornado outbreak appeared to be in Chapman, a town of about 1,400 east of Abilene.

Watson said early Thursday morning that a half-mile-wide tornado tore through the central part of town, damaging downtown businesses and destroying more than 60 homes.

The sun is coming up soon. There undoubtedly will be more damage found. More storms tonight, but may be south of this area.

1. 4 dead, 48 injured as tornado hits Boy Scout camp
BLENCOE, Iowa - Frightened Boy Scouts huddled in a shelter as a tornado tore through their western Iowa campground, killing four people and injuring 48 others who had little to no warning of the approaching twister.

Tornadoes also touched down in Kansas, Minnesota and Nebraska on Wednesday. They killed at least two people in northern Kansas, destroyed much of the small town of Chapman and caused extensive damage on the Kansas State University campus.

In Iowa, rescue workers cut their way through downed branches and dug through debris amid rain and lightning Wednesday night to reach the camp where the 93 boys, ages 13 to 18, and 25 staff members were attending a weeklong leadership training camp.

The boys were split into two groups when the storm hit the Little Sioux Scout Ranch in the remote Loess Hills. One group managed to take shelter, while the other was out hiking.
