NASCAR hit with discrimination suit
Source: Chicago Tribune

When Mauricia Grant finally made it into NASCAR as an official, she was appalled at the way she says she was treated beginning from her first day until her firing last October.

Grant is suing NASCAR for $225 million, alleging racial and sexual discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful termination.

"It was a great, exciting, adrenaline-filled job," Grant, 32, said. "But there was an ongoing daily pattern ."

Grant, who is black, worked as a technical inspector responsible for certifying cars in the Nationwide Series from January 2005 until her termination.

She alleged she was referred to as "Nappy Headed Mo" and "Queen Sheba," by co-workers, was often told she worked on "colored people time," and was frightened by one official who routinely made references to the Ku Klux Klan.

8. Why not go to the laundromat and ride the dryers?
It would be about as exciting. Granted though the lack or crashes would be a minus.

5. I resent that

I like NASCAR and I am anything but a redneck. I'm also sick of having to defend myself for enjoying it. Calling it "non-athletic" indicates ignorance. Modern NASCAR drivers need to be superb athletes able to control 3,400 lb cars inches apart at nearly 200 miles per hour for over 3 hours at a time in temperatures nearly 150 degrees while wearing heavy uniforms. You try that. On the other hand, if this is true, Bryan France really needs to put a stop to it. Racism is unacceptable, period. I think they will deal with this. They've been making a big push lately to attract more African-American fans.

11. Read the comments at the bottom of that article
This is another example of why comment sections need to be restricted to a small number of sites and heavily moderated.

19. Racism in NASCAR is disgusting. My husband has been a
liberal and a NASCAR fan all of his life. He also grew up in a very multi-ethnic society. He wouldn't wouldn't use the N word around our kids any more than he would us the F word. I hope this lawsuit proceeds and brings Grant the relief she deserves.

20. Update : 2 Officials Suspended as part of Lawsuit Investigation
Two officials named in a $225 million racial discrimination and sexual harassment lawsuit against NASCAR have been placed on administrative leave for violating company policy, The Associated Press has learned.

The officials, who were not immediately identified, were sent home from Kentucky Speedway on Friday evening, a person familiar with the NASCAR investigation told the AP. The person requested anonymity because NASCAR’s investigation is ongoing.

Mauricia Grant filed her suit Tuesday, alleging 23 specific incidents of sexual harassment and 34 specific incidents of racial and gender discrimination during her time as a technical inspector for NASCAR’s second-tier Nationwide Series.

Grant, who is black, claims her October 2007 firing was retaliation for complaining about the way she was treated on the job from her January 2005 hiring.

Scroll down to the end of the story - one of the other officials named several times in the lawsuit has the unfortunate name of David Duke!!

21. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission should clean out all the racist fuckers from NASCAR.
Make sure that racism will be a thing of the past in any sport.
