Bush disagrees with court's Guantanamo ruling

By DEB RIECHMANN, Associated Press Writer
12 minutes ago
ROME - President Bush on Thursday strongly disagreed with a Supreme Court ruling that clears foreign terrorism suspects at Guantanamo Bay to challenge their detention in U.S. civilian courts. Bush suggested new legislation may now be needed to keep the American people safe.

"We'll abide by the court's decision," Bush said during a news conference in Rome. "That doesn't mean I have to agree with it." The court's decision was sure to be popular in Europe, where many leaders have called for the closing of of Guantanamo.

In its third rebuke of the Bush administration's treatment of prisoners, the court ruled 5-4 that the government is violating the rights of prisoners being held indefinitely and without charges at the U.S. naval base in Cuba. The court's liberal justices were in the majority.

"It was a deeply divided court, and I strongly agree with those who dissented," Bush said. "And that dissent was based upon their serious concerns about U.S. national security."

little dic-tator.

reminds me of this interview, I will insert snip here, it was with Dr. Justin Frank

http://www.larouchepub.com/other/interviews/2006/3314justin_frank.html

"Well, to me the signing statements are about a person who refuses to obey the law. That's true. And it's about Presidential power, and he's got support from a few of his legal experts, like Gonzales and Alito, now. But the signing statements, essentially, are the same thing as a two-year-old, who is not going to go to the toilet when his mother wants him to. He is just going to do it, when and where he wants to. And it's the same thing as a person who says, "You can't tell me I can't drink. I'm going to make a false ID. I'm going to go and become the supplier." "You can't tell me I can't play baseball! I'm going to be the commissioner of a stickball league." "You can't tell me I can't do this; I'm going to brand pledges in a fraternity—." In other words, "You can't tell me, I can't invade Iraq. I don't need a permission slip from the UN."

In other words, the law to him is a straitjacket, and there's a line that is direct and easy to follow in him, from his earliest childhood. And the irony is, now, he's the President who executes the laws, and yet, he still rebels against the law.

EIR: You commented the other day that he is of the view that the Constitution is advice with no obligation to listen to it.

Frank: That's right. It's what kids do with their parents. The Constitution for him is like a parent saying, "Now, I want you to call me at 10 o'clock"; "I want you to do this"; "I want you to study"; "I want you to park your car on the side of the street"—all of these things. And all Bush hears is "Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah." That's how the Constitution is to him".

8. Here's a little SC trivia
As an italian-American who's sickeningly embarrassed by Scalia and Alito, both of whom would have made Mussolini proud, I must tell you that Antonin Scalia's nickname is "Nino." Since he's not an Anthony, the name Tony doesn't go here.

Either name, I hope he rots.

15. This was a GREAT, but very, NARROW (5-4) victory for the CONSTITUTION . . .
Edited on Thu Jun-12-08 04:06 PM by Krashkopf
And it PROVES why we Democrats need to come together to insure that Barack Obama is elected president. The next President will almost certainly nominate 1 or 2 more Supreme Court Justices.

A president McCain will nominate 1 or 2 more Justices who think like Scalia. And if he does a 5 to 4 VICTORY becomes a 5 to 4 or 6 to 3 loss, and America will, in short, be FUCKED for the next 30 years.

Think about it . . . and VOTE OBAMA!

17. Too bad you don't agree with it. Tough.
And the spineless Dems can't get around it either. It is a CONSTITUTIONAL right. Thank God for the Supreme Court. Now, we have to be sure that Barack Obama is there. Stevens is old, and any of these guys can fall over. WE MUST pull together!!
