McCain goes after second Obama VP vetter
Source: CNN

From Ed Hornick
CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The day after Jim Johnson resigned from Sen. Barack Obama's vice presidential candidate vetting committee, Sen. John McCain set his sights on Eric Holder, one of the two remaining members of the committee.

"I think people in the media and observers will make a decision as to whether these people, individuals, should be part of Sen. Obama's campaign," McCain said in Boston, Massachusetts, on Thursday. "I think it is a matter of record that Mr. Holder recommended the pardoning of Mr. (Marc) Rich."

Rich was a commodities trader who fled to Europe in 1983 after tax evasion charges and allegations of illegal oil dealings with Iran. He was pardoned by former President Clinton at the end of his second term, while Holder was deputy attorney general.

In a response Thursday, Obama campaign spokesman Hari Sevugan said McCain was raising old allegations rather than talking about the issues.

"It's telling that John McCain -- whose vice presidential search process is headed by a prominent D.C. lobbyist who served as the Reagan administration's point man on the Iran-Contra scandal -- would try to recycle a tired attack on Mr. Holder," she said. Sevugan was referring to A.B. Culvahouse, who is leading McCain's vice presidential candidate search and was counsel to the president in the Reagan White House....

13. I hear the song "Sweet Caroline" is about her.
but wait, they play that at Fenway, and noted Kool-Aid drinker Curt Schilling pitches for the Sox... that'll never work.

3. Obama gave them Johnson. If he gives them Holder, they'll just go after Caroline Kennedy next.
This is Washington Beltway inside baseball crap. Nobody cares. It will go away in a few days IF the Obama people don't give in.

8. yep. they saw that resignation as a reason to keep going.
it just pisses me off because instead of dealing with issues we are treated to a volleying of this baloney back and forth.

4. Eric Holder is above reproach
He's a sterling example of a man, personally and professionally. He's married to a good friend of mine. Just a straight-up good man and a brilliant attorney.

That he was involved in the Marc Rich pardon means nothing. Who were the people involved in Fuckface's commutation of Irving "Scooter" Libby's conviction? Let's hear about them before we go after someone who was assisting a President exercise what is a Constitutionally protected right of the office.

John McCain is making this race - already - into an old-fashioned Republican slimefest. They're shameful.

I wonder what they'll try to "get" on Caroline Kennedy. That should be fun.

5. This is exactly why I thought it was a bad idea for Obama to drop Johnson!
He was letting the Pubs get the upper hand and caving to criticism. I like that his campaign is fighting back now on Holdr, but they should have done that with Johnson too!

As I said when this Johnson thing happened..."They could hire ME to do the vetting and I would pass any kind of background digging, BUT I'm not in the DC loop of knowing what scandals exist and whose background & experience would really make a good VP!" Sometimes being a connected insider helps!

10. Can't the campaign find someone clean to put on this committee?
Why open the process to attack when there are people besides the same old insiders who are just as capable of carrying out the task?

12. Because - as was mentioned upthread you need an insider to know
What dirt is out there. It takes one to know one and all that.

14. The recent bombing of Pakistani outposts suggest we have
already begun military actions to get him before the November election.

I have been predicting this for quite a while.

The Bush plan was to hold the Guantanamo kangaroo trials, convict selected prisoners there (and sentence some of them possibly to death) and then announce the capture of Bin Laden -- by November in order to insure a McCain victory.

That's how I have figured it for a long time.

I'm all for catching Bin Laden and bringing him and his accomplices to justice after a fair trial, but, I'll bet you, that this is going to be yet another gimmick for the political benefit of the Republican machine.

If only the Republicans were as good at substance as they are at show.

15. Side-effect, people seeing Obama consultants step down think he's weak
That's a side effect the McCainiacs are seeking. They attack an Obama guy and the person steps down. Gee, Obama caves in to pressure too easily. He's soft. They're enhancing that perception.
