Defaced E. Idaho stop signs with anti-war message for sale

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho -- A war protest in which 179 stop signs were defaced by stenciling the word "war" in white letters under the "stop" has morphed into an exercise in free market capitalism.

A judge ordered that at least some of the defaced stop signs belonged to the people who vandalized them once they paid restitution. Those signs are now being sold - briskly and at a profit - for $80 apiece.

It has also encouraged others in the region noted for its conservative voting record to come forward with their own misgivings about the war in Iraq.

"I really am shocked almost weekly by hearing people tell me, 'Thank you,'" 19-year-old Alexander Piet told the Post Register. "It's really refreshing."

1. According to an article I posted earlier (as a subthread), 400 Talibani and 1,150 prisoners total
Here's the portion of the article I posted earlier a Friday News Dump thread. It deserved its on thread though. Thanks for doing it.

Officials in Afghanistan say militants have attacked the main prison in the southern city of Kandahar with a car bomb and rockets, killing police and setting nearly all of an estimated 1,150 prisoners free.

"All the prisoners escaped. There is no one left," said Wali Karzai, the brother of president Hamid Karzai and the president of Kandahar's provincial council.

Militants first exploded a water tanker near the entrance to the gate of the Kandahar prison, then several suicide bombers entered and detonated their explosives, crumbling two prison walls, Karzai said.

The prison holds common criminals but also some 400 Taliban militants, who have been fighting against Nato troops and the Afghan government.

3. Well, those "defaced" signs SHOULD sell at a profit, shouldn't they?
after all, they'd been upgraded to status of protest art.
