WASHINGTON — Questions from the media prompted Republican John McCain to cancel a fundraiser at the home of a Texas oilman who once joked that women should give in while being raped.

The Texan, Republican Clayton "Claytie" Williams, made the joke during his failed 1990 campaign for governor against Democrat Ann Richards. Williams compared rape to the weather, saying, "As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it." He also compared Richards to the cattle on his ranch, saying he would "head her and hoof her and drag her through the dirt."

Williams' comments made national news at the time and remain easy to find on the Internet. Even so, McCain's campaign said it hadn't known about the remarks.

"These were obviously incredibly offensive remarks that the campaign was unaware of at the time it was scheduled," McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said. "It's positive that he did apologize at the time, but the comments are nonetheless offensive."

I didn't know Claytie was still around. Williams had a solid lead over Ann Richards in 1990 up until the time he uttered the "sit back and enjoy it" remark. Ann then came from behind and won largely because of the remark.

1. Scary thing is, even after "Claytie" said that, and all other sorts of stupid shit
He still JUST BARELY LOST to Ann. What the hell was it about the guy that made his supporters that stubbornly loyal?

5. Hey now, I just graduated from Texas A&M in 1990.
It revolted me to have to go into the Clayton Williams Alumni Center to pick up my class ring.

THIS Aggie voted for Ms. Ann, thank you very much.

I didn't vote for Gov. Goodhair either, despite his alma mater.

McCain Says No to Returning Funds Raised by Controversial Oilman

Updated 4:09 p.m.
By Juliet Eilperin
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) will not return the $300,000 raised by a Texas Republican who joked in 1990 that women should submit to rape and "enjoy it."

Yesterday McCain cancelled a fundraiser that Texas oilman Clayton Williams was planning to hold at his Midland, Tex. home on Monday, after The Washington Post and ABC News questioned what the senator thought of Williams' remarks that women should give in while being raped. "As long as it's inevitable, you might as well lie back and enjoy it," he said during his unsuccessful bid for governor against the late Ann Richards.

Williams, who told the Midland Reporter-Telegram that he had already raised $300,000 for the presumptive GOP nominee, also said at the time that when it came to campaigning against Richards, he would "head her and hoof her and drag her through the dirt" like a cow on his ranch.

7. I thought that was Bobby Knight who said it!
Isn't he the old IU coach? I remember him being banged about by everyone when he said something like this.

"Williams' comments made national news at the time and remain easy to find on the Internet. Even so, McCain's campaign said it hadn't known about the remarks."

14. Texas Republicans were not pleased McCain snubbed their convention this weekend
Yet he was planning on being in the state for this fundraiser on Monday. It got more than a small amount of press.

If not for the fact that McCain was a no show at the convention, this little private big-money fundraiser would more than likely have went unnoticed.

15. Claytie was also famous for his "honey hunts."
He'd hire a bunch of prostitutes, rumor had it they were Mexican, turn them loose on his ranch and order them to hide, then he'd let his cronies go find them for a game of hide, seek, chase and whatever.

What a total moran and creep.

18. No documentation that I know of, but it was well known & reported at the time. I live in TX....
I think the women were also naked or scantily clad. Williams was a true, old-fashioned sexist boar. Another post says Ann beat him in the governorship election, but I thought he had to drop out after the "rape" comment. In any case, after his shenanigans and horrid statements were reported, he was done for.

I'm surprised he's still around. I thought he was dead.

If you want documentation, you might Google some old news articles and see if the honey hunts are mentioned.
