Don't move migratory birds during nesting season, Border Patrol told

ZAPATA, June 14 - A nature conservationist is urging Border Patrol to hold off from sending the bulldozers in to clear a mile and a half of land near the Rio Grande in Laredo because it is nesting season.

Nancy Umphres, of the Zapata County Nature Conservation Society, said she was “distressed” to get a call recently from Curt Schaeffer of Gulf South Research Corporation (GSRC) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, asking for cage measurements at the wildlife rescue.

“GSRC wanted my cage measurements for all the baby birds that I would be receiving due to next week’s bulldozing of a mile and a half of land along the river. I recommended that they wait a few weeks until nesting season was over but was told that was impossible,” Umphres told the Guardian.

GSRC, an environmental consultancy firm, needs know the cage measurements in order to apply for a permit to move the birds. A permit is needed to move migratory birds under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
