Bush unrepentant over Iraq war (sorry that innocent civilians died in Iraq)
Source: UK Guardian

<snip>

In an interview with Sky News, the President also played down reports of a rift with Gordon Brown over troop withdrawals from Iraq.

However, he appeared to indicate that they had in the past failed to communicate properly over their military plans.

While Mr Bush's arrival in London was greeted by 2,000 anti-war demonstrators gathered in Parliament Square, he was unrepentant about his decision to invade Iraq.

"When anybody dies in a war, of course it weighs on my conscience. On the other hand ... getting rid of Saddam Hussein was the right thing to do and I'm not going to back off one inch on that," he said. "The world is better off without him and I'm sorry that innocent civilians died in Iraq but I want you to remember, hundreds of thousands died when Saddam Hussein was leading that country. War is brutal, I wish we didn't have war, but I believe we're now on the way to peace."

3. first time he's ever acknowledged dead Iraqi civilians
I will believe that the Republican party is not a
racist party when they acknowledge and apologize as
a individuals and a group for what has been done to the
people of Iraq.

5. And he had not the balls
to say it in his own country. I don't know why I am surprised he charged the British Special Forces to get OBL. The fact that he has to go to Europe to push this crap is disgusting enough, the fact that innocent Americans will die from the floods in Iowa id even more disgusting. HE doesn't care about the sanctity of life.

9. He once guessed "30,000," and shrugged it off.
Of course, his estimate leaves off a zero from the more reliable approximations. Jon Stewart juxtaposed Bush's words from that week...

"I oppose stem cell research because all human life is sacred." // "Yes, there have been civilian casualties, numbering... oh, I'd say 30,000."

Stewart: "So Iraqi life is sacred-ish?"

6. Sorry that innocent civilians died...I say, that was quite decent of him.
:sarcasm:

Wouldn't it be interesting like an old Twilight Zone episode where Bush wakes up and he is no longer president, but some ordinary Iraqi civilian caught up in the chaos and violence there as he screams, "I am the president! I am the president! I saved you from Sadaam! Be grateful!"

17. his apology to the innocent civilians - not to be countered with precision, just another vague comma
in Bushian history. The Presidential museum will have no pictures of the innocents that were killed to effectuate neo-conservative ideology.

8. yes, ousting Saddam was important. After 200 years more he may have killed as many innocents as Bush
Edited on Mon Jun-16-08 02:39 AM by O.M.B.inOhio
200 years? I wonder whether anybody has calculated this for real.

We had to oust a meanie tyrant; meanwhile Rwanda is not our business.

And the cost of the war. I understand there used to be a number of organizations working for democratic reform in Saddam's Iraq. Imagine if some of these had been given ... oh, a day's worth of war spending. Imagine what the neocons would have said about that.

10. If we can't get a real accounting of how many civilians have died in Iraq in this day and age
as a result of bush's illegal invasion, when can we?

13. Me neither.
Unlike the chickenshit Republicans who stocked up on duct tape and plastic wrap, I never felt any credible threat from Saddam Hussein whatsoever. In fact, I had a pretty nice and happy life before President Cloverfield came along. So what's in it for me?

12. WTF would that chicken shit know about war?
Please note his use of the word innocent... because in Bush's mind, fewer "innocent" people have died by his "war".... the greater number that have actually died were not innocent to his thinking...

to include any that died by torture

Dana Perino used this talking point a while back..."the number of innocent people dying is low"

14. He Knows He Can Start Them with no accountability
Just as the rich and powerful always have. Why? Because there are to many pathetic sellouts in our country who pander to those who throw them an occasional bone.

It pisses me off too...

15. Bush is so sorry about civilian deaths, that he not only refuses to count them...
but also attacks the credibility of anybody that DOES count them.
