Gore to Appear With Obama
Source: New York Times

FLINT, Mich. – Former Vice President Al Gore will appear in Detroit tonight for his debut campaign appearance with Senator Barack Obama, extending an endorsement and urging all Democrats to rally behind the party’s fall ticket.

“A few hours from now I will step on stage in Detroit, Michigan to announce my support for Senator Barack Obama,” Mr. Gore said in an e-mail sent to his supporters. “From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected President of the United States.”

Throughout the long Democratic primary, Mr. Gore talked frequently to Mr. Obama. But tonight’s rally at the Joe Louis Arena in downtown Detroit marks the first time they will appear together on the same stage. The endorsement was announced – on Mr. Gore’s terms – to supporters on his vast e-mail list.

“I’ve never asked members of AlGore.com to contribute to a political campaign before, but this moment and this election are too important to let pass without taking action,” Mr. Gore said. He added, “Over the past 18 months, Barack Obama has united a movement. He knows change does not come from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue or Capitol Hill. It begins when people stand up and take action.”

21. My girlfriend's mom is seriously considering going
She invited us as well but I can't stand crowds and I know that place is going to be packed so tightly people will be lucky to get out alive.

She's very pro-gore, pro-obama, pro-dem and I think if she goes and gets to see Gore too she'll be very happy.

69. I was there!
It was such a great event. I've never seen Gore in person, and I'm really a Gore girl at heart -- I worked on the Draft Gore movement for a year and put my heart and soul into it. I got a text message from Obama while I was outside with all the volunteers trying to get organized saying that they'd be appearing together. I started jumping up and down like a little kid. I've been hoping for weeks he'd do this here and that I'd be there. What a great day!

67. dissing Keith
I was disheartened that Keith Olberman was very sneering regarding Al Gore's endorsement. I guess he has to carry water for General Electric. I am close to not watching his show too. I don't watch any corporate media except Olberman, but he may have to go too.

That's the promise that is needed. Also the promise that Obama will remember that he is responsible for the environment he leaves his children? That's the other promise that Obama can make to Gore and that is needed.

18. Michigan getting lotsa love lately.
I can't tell you how it pleases me to see all this focus on previously taken for granted Michigan. Yes, we had our poor leadership and the subsequesnt primary season of neglect but now....redemption. First Edwards comes here to endorse Obama and now Gore. Poor Michigan is struggling mightily and the Dem base has been miserable.

Now we have been getting more love from our candidate than I recall in previous elections and things are just getting started. If ever there was a state that needed some positive change, it's Michigan.

But cheer up ! That is not a passing the torch thing.

Mr Al Gore is a Nobel Peace Prize winner and

also a Prize winner of the Academy Award for Documentary Oscar.

And the list goes on and on.That man is amazing!

His endorsement is putting a thousand pound weight

into the balance to flush the PNACers.

With Mr Kucinich (I don't call him Dennis anymore since

last monday.) he's part of the few politicians that I

respect and trust.

Thanks for the upbeat post. And I feel the same way - there are VERY FEW politicians that I respect and trust - Gore and Kucinich are 2 of them. I was fixing dinner just now, imagining an all-star cabinet... Al Gore: Secretary of State, John Edwards, Attorney General -- what could Dennis Kucinich be? 39.  Gore endorses Obama and promises to help him
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080616/ap_on_el_pr/obama_gore

Al Gore announced his endorsement of Barack Obama Monday and promised to help the Democrat achieve what eluded him — the presidency.

(snip)
"It means a lot, obviously," Obama said of Gore's support, as he greeted workers outside the General Motors Flint Engine South plant. "He's somebody who is a visionary, not just for the party, but for the country."

Gore also asked for donations to help fund Obama's effort — the first time he's asked members of his Web site AlGore.com to contribute to a political campaign.

"Over the past 18 months, Barack Obama has united a movement. He knows change does not come from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue or Capitol Hill. It begins when people stand up and take action," Gore wrote. "With the help of millions of supporters like you, Barack Obama will bring the change we so desperately need in order to solve our country's most pressing problems."

46. This cycle I think the Dems held back on the endorsements until the primaries had played out -
I think they (the generic Dem they) had a feeling that they didn't want to be seen as dissing the Clintons, or of jumping on the Obama bandwagon too quickly. I guess that is all well and good, but now that the issue has been settled, it's good to see everyone coming home to roost.

One can only hope that Gore will be actually making appearances, increasing the voter turnout and helping to increase the plurality we're sure to win, especially among college-aged and first time voters. How about resources and precinct watchers to blanket Ohio? 2004 taught us that 20 rural counties out of the limelight can turn a state from blue to red.

61. A Formality...
I believe he would be doing this regardless of the candidate considering how far along it is, so I do not see this as a personal endorsement but a purely political one. He waited until Obama was the only one left, so that says something. He's a loyal Democrat doing what is expected to unify his party.

Although, I find it a bit disappointing considering what he wrote in his book The Assault on Reason about money and soundbites being the reasons for the toxicity of politics along with appealing to emotion over reason, and then asking us to donate to someone who already has millions without specifically delineating why besides the same vague statements we hear from everyone else.

I can also hardly afford to keep my head above water these days, let alone donate to Obama or anyone else right now. Obama also just spoke for AIPAC… I suppose Al Gore supports that too? That would be disappointing as well.

So as a supporter of his I still retain my right to think for myself and decide what I will do in November based on what happens between now and then. And hopefully, he has told Obama that his climate change plan is abyssmal and he has to stop kissing up to the coal industry in order for his rhetoric on the environment to look credible.

64. This is SO OUT OF HAND!
We live in the ununited state of punditry.
Dan Abrams & his ago buddy pundits are talking with Obama in the backround talking but I CAN'T HEAR HIM. NO MIKE FEED!
Now abrams is regurgitating the gossip about Michelle Obama.
PROTEST! They think they OWN the AIR.

65. Carrying it LIVE on WXYZ dot com
Verdict with Dan Abrams had Gore but felt we needed to hear their opinions of Gore more than we needed to hear Obama and talked over him. Thankful that WXYZ is streaming it.

66. Excellent !
I hope the Obama campaign makes good use of Al. He could make the most compelling case against McBush's 3rd term.
