Stan Winston, dead at 62
Source: LA Times

Stan Winston, an Oscar-winning visual effects artist, has died at age 62.

Winston died at home Sunday evening after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma, according to a rep from Stan Winston Studio.

"Stan died peacefully at home surrounded by family," a spokeswoman said.

Winston won four visual effects Oscars and earned multiple nominations. His first Oscar was for James Cameron's "Aliens" (1986). Winston later won two Oscars for "Terminator 2: Judgment Day" (1992) (visual effects and makeup) and 1993's "Jurassic Park."

2. A true giant
from behind the camera. A lot of folks won't know who he is, but I'm sure he's scared the daylights out of all of them.

You'll be missed Mr. Winston.

3. Winston has an impressive example of work to leave behind.
Some of his special effects were nothing short of incredible. You knew there was no way it could be real...but it looked so real.

RIP, Stan.

5. Awww no... :**(
I loved his work. I always considered him and Rick Baker successors to the throne of the great Dick Smith. I remember his directorial debut film Pumpkinhead (ubercool monster)as the first anti-revenge film I've ever seen.

'Bye Stan, movies won't be the same without you...

6. Stop the Stan Winston hate and grave dancing !
:sarcasm:
Unfortunately Stan Winston will not get near the attention that Tim Russert is getting here on DU. Stan was a great contributor to visual cinematic art and never assisted the lies of the Bush crime family.

10. That sucks
Stan was a top-notch effects person. Probably the top in the industry. He did a lot of ground-breaking stuff that we now take for granted.

Requisat In Pace, Stan.

15. A true legend in monster making.
Some of his creations, like Pumkinhead, were genius. Some still scare the crap out of me.

18. Damn
Just found this out.

This guy was the pinnacle of special effects. Nobody did creatures like Mr. Winston.

If there is a God, he's asking Stan for tips right now.
