Israel and Hamas 'agree truce'

Israel carries out regular raids into Gaza to counter Hamas rocket fire
Israel and militant group Hamas have agreed on a truce starting this Thursday, a senior Hamas official has told the BBC.

The official said he was confident all militant groups in Gaza would abide by the agreement, brokered by Egypt.

There has been no confirmation of the deal from Israel.

Earlier at least six Palestinians were reportedly killed in Israeli air strikes in southern Gaza. Israel said it had targeted "terror operatives".

Islamic Jihad said a missile struck a car carrying five of its members near Khan Younis. A sixth man died in a separate strike nearby.

3. Report: Israel confirms truce with Hamas
Accord, to go into effect Thursday, aims to end violence in Gaza
An Egyptian-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip that could ease a crippling Israeli blockade of the coastal territory will begin Thursday, an Israeli official has confirmed.

The announcement of the ceasefire came on a day when Israel killed six militants in air strikes in Gaza. The ceasefire aims to end rocket and mortar bomb attacks on Israel from the coastal enclave and Israeli raids and air strikes in the territory.

"Both sides have pledged to halt all hostilities and all military activities against each other," Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki said in Cairo Tuesday, after weeks of separate talks with Israel and Hamas.

An Israeli Defense official, Amos Gilad, flew to Cairo for overnight consultations to put the final touches to the deal.

4. Rockets fired at Israel from Gaza shake truce ( four days)
Edited on Tue Jun-24-08 04:13 PM by ohio2007
JERUSALEM - Palestinian militants fired three homemade rockets into southern Israel on Tuesday, threatening to unravel a cease-fire days after it began, and Israel responded by closing vital border crossings into Gaza.

Despite what it called a "gross violation" of the truce, Israel refrained from military action and said it would send an envoy soon to Egypt to work on the next stage of a broader cease-fire agreement: a prisoner swap that would bring home an Israeli soldier held by Hamas for more
than two years.

Hamas, the militant Islamic group that rules Gaza, promised to rein in the Iran- and Syria-backed faction that carried out the rocket attacks and pledged to remain committed.........

Hamas wants a do over and has demanded more 'fighters' to be released in exchange for one IDF soldier.
Dunno if they are giving up an IDF corpse or a breather in exchange.

no matter,
they will grab a few more hostages when the opportunity arises.

But I could be wrong .

6. Two weeks = 14 days.
Edited on Tue Jun-24-08 04:45 PM by Behind the Aegis
Article was updated on June 18th, today is June 24th, that is a total of 6 days. A full week is 7 days, which is likely when it was orignally written as kpete is pretty good at following LBN rules.

8. As for "the truce", it was to start last thursday, June 19th after a last minute rocket barrage
was thrown into the mix so the the truce held up for;

Friday
Saturday
Sunday
Monday

Palestinian and Egyptian officials say the truce is to come into effect at 0600 (0300 GMT) on Thursday. As well as a halt to all hostilities, this stage of the deal also envisages a partial reopening of Gaza's borders, they add.

A second stage would focus on the return of captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit and on a deal to reopen the main Rafah crossing into Egypt, they say.

In the talks process until now, Israeli concerns have centred on whether all militant groups would adhere to a truce, and what Egypt would do to stop arms smuggling into Gaza, says our correspondent

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/7459200.stm

It's actually a follow up to the same truce story. Why start a new thread when it is still an ongoing timeline event.
