Republicans block energy credits, tax breaks in Senate bill
Edited on Tue Jun-17-08 03:21 PM by cal04
Source: Associated Press

Unfazed by pressure from Democrats and the business community, Republicans for the second time in a week prevented the Senate from taking up a tax bill providing more than $50 billion in renewable energy credits and tax breaks for families and businesses.

The vote today to move to the legislation was 52-44, eight short of the 60 votes needed. Only five Republicans voted to end the filibuster against action on the bill: others objected to the Democratic plan to pay for the tax relief by making some hedge fund managers and multinational corporations pay more taxes.

Opponents argued that tax relief should not be matched with what they regarded as tax increases.

On June 10, the vote to move to the bill was 50-44, 10 short.

6. "tax relief should not be matched"
"Opponents argued that tax relief should not be matched with what they regarded as tax increases."

Republicans are not fiscally conservative. They don't believe in balancing the budget.

15. "Not Voting - 4 ... Clinton (D-NY)"
Get your ass back in that chamber, Hillary. You aren't running for anything anymore, and that was a flimsy excuse while it lasted. Your constituents are waiting for you to do your fucking job. Either show up or resign now and let someone else into the Senate who will work.

I'm getting to be of the opinion that any elected legislative official who misses more than 15-20% of votes without a damned good reason (e.g. illness or caring for an ill loved one) should be kicked out with forfeiture of pay and pension. Running for another office isn't a good enough reason - if you can't be bothered to show up for work, we can't be bothered to pay you. My job won't pay me if I just blow off work so I can openly look for a better job.
