Obama, McCain close in Va. (virtual tie-Rasmussen)
Source: Richmond Times-Dispatch

Sen. Barack Obama has gained ground in Virginia and is virtually tied with Sen. John McCain in an early indication of how competitive the state is shaping up to be this fall.

Five percent of Virginia voters favor a third-party candidate, and 7 percent are undecided, the survey showed.

If Obama picked Webb, 23 percent of voters would be more likely to vote for Obama, while 32 percent would be less likely to vote for him, the survey showed. Neither Webb nor Kaine has publicly put much stock in their chances.

The latest survey from Rasmussen Reports shows that Warner is expanding his lead over Gilmore, leading 60 percent to 33 percent. The two former governors are vying to succeed Sen. John W. Warner, R-Va., who is retiring.

1. like i thought, Webb doesn't seem to bring much to the ticket
he was just elected to the Senate and is not popular like Warner is. if Obama wants to pick someone from the state he should just go with Warner and 2nd Kaine.

but as some have already said, Obama can win the state without someone from the state. if he wants someone with military or foreign policy experience someone like Wes Clark is better since he would add Arkansas which currently Obama isn't likely to win. plus we wont be losing any Senate seats.

2. Webb and Kaine both poll in the mid 50's here. Warner is in the 60's
I saw numbers last week or so. Kaine actually had higher numbers (59 to 57 I think it was) than Webb but that is because Kaine is seen in juxtaposition to the General Assembly Republicans who simply whine and cry about taxes and don't actually do anything (transportation is the huge issue here).

5. Webb barely won an election against a damaged opponent
Edited on Wed Jun-18-08 09:14 AM by Mike Daniels
9,000 votes or thereabouts was the difference.

Anyone who thinks Webb is going to bring a swell of people over to Obamba is delusional.

3. I want to help!
Rockbridge County, checking in. If anyone knows how I can get started helping out the Obama campaign, please let me know. I don't have any money, but I have a 50cc scooter and one helluva war room.

8. Heh.
As appropriate as that comparison may be, Rockbridge is named for its interesting geological phenomenon, which one cannot see without having a reading of the Book of Genesis blasted at 100 decibels.

Rockbridge also demonstrates the traditional "islands of enlightenment in a sea of ignorance" dichotomy which is visible on most county/precinct voter maps of this Commonwealth. The City of Lexington, which is completely surrounded by Rockbridge, is ardently Democratic because it is an educational center with two small colleges. Rockbridge, on the other hand, is staunchly Republican because, well, they don't really know any better, I guess. Our Representative, Virgil Goode, has kept his job by pulling a Joe Lieberman long before Joe ever had to think about doing it. He needs to be fired.

The trick to maximizing Democratic votes in this area will be to concentrate on improving turnout in the "cities" while carefully identifying reasonable people in the counties, and not encouraging or provoking the knuckle-draggers in any way. I've already signed up through the website, but if anyone is already setting things up, please let me know so I can start right away.

7. This is the Richmond Times-Disgrace
When I read the headline I knew that O had to be in the lead. The T-D's "from wire reports" articles are as funny as anything on The Onion.

Note too Beet that this is Rasmussen so that means that O could really be outside the Margin of Error.

As usual Sabato represents the status quo.
