KABUL (AFP) - Four British soldiers were killed in the restive southern Afghan province of Helmand, officials said Wednesday, including reportedly the first female British military fatality.

The soldiers serving with NATO died Tuesday when their vehicle was caught in a blast during what the British defence ministry called "a deliberate operation" east of the provincial capital Lashkar Gah.

Three were killed in the explosion and two wounded. One of the injured died later at Britain's main base at Camp Bastion, in Helmand, the ministry said in a statement.

The Press Association news agency reported that the dead included a female soldier, without quoting sources. The defence ministry declined to confirm the report.

KABUL - Two NATO soldiers were killed and 10 wounded during a patrol in eastern Afghanistan on Wednesday, the alliance force said, a day after four British troopers died in the troubled south.

"Two ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) soldiers died and 10 received wounds while on patrol in Paktika (province) of Afghanistan today," an ISAF statement said.

The two fatalities, whose nationalities were not revealed, took to 90 the number of international soldiers killed in Afghanistan this year.

The total number of British troops in Afghanistan is set to rise
Four UK soldiers, one of them a woman, have died in Afghanistan after their vehicle was caught in an explosion.

The woman, believed to a member of the Intelligence Corps, is the first female UK soldier to have died there.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown praised the bravery of the soldiers, who died east of Lashkar Gah in Helmand Province.

The dead soldiers' next-of-kin have been informed. Their deaths take to nine the number of UK soldiers killed in Afghanistan in the last 10 days.

The Ministry of Defence is not expected to name the soldiers until Thursday.
