Tiger Woods to sit out remainder of golf season

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Fresh off a dramatic, hard-fought victory at the U.S. Open, top-ranked golfer Tiger Woods is planning to sit out the rest of the golf season to have additional surgery on his left knee, the Associated Press said Wednesday. Woods, who had surgery on the knee in April, grimaced a number of times after hitting shots at the Open tournament this past weekend at Torrey Pines in San Diego. In Woods' first tournament since the surgery, he ended up playing 91 holes at the Open, 19 more than the usual in a tournament. An 18-hole playoff with Rocco Mediate ended in a tie, forcing one hole of sudden-death play.

2. Although I respect Woods as the best ever, the one positive thing
about this - if there is one - is that the media will now be forced to cover tournaments as a whole instead of their usual and mind-numbing "Tiger is doing this, he did that, be birdied this and eagled that, and in tenuously-related news we are attempting to confirm unsubstantiated rumors that other players are participating in this tournament as well."

I admire the hell out of Tiger, but the media coverage has me avoiding golf telecasts at all costs during weeks in which he plays. I'd rather go to an Abba concert than watch the media gush over anyone that way.

4. I'd normally agree with you on this but he does seem to win a lot.
But I do remember this phenomenon early in Tiger's career an in other sporting events ad nasuem. Upcoming coverage of the Olympics for example scares me with its who cares who won how did that American, whose second cousin had cancer and we missed half the events cause we profiled her, do?

8. Olympic coverage is even worse, yes.
Making a long human interest story out of every U.S. athlete is like torture to me.

"Steve may have only been the third-best grocery bagger at his local co-op, but he knew he had other talents. One day, he threw a brick through a neighbor's window, not knowing that his neighbor was a respected shot put coach. Within weeks, Steve was at his first track and field meet, taking his first step on what would eventually be the long road to Beijing. Listen to his mother's former Avon Lady tell the story..."

As for Tiger, though, the coverage is the same whether he wins or loses. As rare as it would be, he could be 14 shots out going into the final nine, and the media still wouldn't grasp the fact that other golfers are participating.

It's like the Chinese water torture. Tiger. Tiger. Tiger. Tiger. TIGER. TIGER. TIGER. TIGER. TIGER. TIGER. TIGER. TIGER.

As far as I'm concerned, ENOUGH ALREADY.

5. It's not Tiger's fault that he made the better golfers look mediocre
Edited on Wed Jun-18-08 11:16 AM by rocknation
and the mediocre golfers nonexistent. It's good news for the rest of the field, of course. But it's bad news for the golf business because it will drive away the non-hardcore golf fans that Tiger bought in. The NBA has yet to recover from Michael Jordan's retirement.

9. It's not Tiger I'm blaming.
It's a media that goes so far overboard that a likable guy who is the best ever has to shitcan the rest of the season for knee surgery and I actually consider it a welcome break.

10. With Tiger out.....
....we don't have to call it "golf" anymore. We can go back to calling it what it is - walking.

15. That would be me too. No Tiger??? No watch golf for me. The rest of the players,
good as they may be, are just boring...Except for Rocco of course, he was just wonderful including last night on Leno. Very personable and likable.

11. I had
knee surgery a little over 18 months ago (ACL replacement on my left knee) and it still hurts when I go golfing. Tiger is only what? less than a month?

It looks like he is having ACL surgery, so he will be out for at least 6 months (you are in a brace for 90ish days after the surgery) and full rehab can take as long as a year especially if they do an autograft (using his own tissue - probably from his hamstring or petellar tendon), it's a little bit shorter doing an allograft (using cadaver tissue) he is young and an elite level athlete so they'll probably do the autograft.

21. Amen....
He played the best tournament I have ever seen. It rates up there with Secretariat winning the triple crown, the American yacht team take beck the America's cup, the American Hockey team beat the Russians, Pavarotti first appearance at the Lyric Opera, or Michael Jordan hanging in the air. If he never plays another round of golf, I can rest knowing I saw the best in action.

14. He played with a stress fracture to his left tibia as well as the ligament damage...OUCH!
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080618/ap_on_sp_go_ne/glf_woods_future;_ylt=AnodrKaPAVanbsLyrGLJt805.3QA

Tiger Woods will miss the rest of the season because of surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left knee, an injury he has been dealing with the last 10 months despite winning nine of 12 tournaments.

Woods also said he suffered a double stress fracture of his left tibia while preparing to return to the PGA Tour last month, which forced him to miss the Memorial and was the source of his pain at Torrey Pines when he won the U.S. Open.

He had arthroscopic surgery April 15 to clean out cartilage in his left knee, bypassing ACL surgery with hopes it could get him through the 2008 season. But going 91 holes for his 14th career major made it impossible to play any longer.

"Now, it is clear that the right thing to do is to listen to my doctors, follow through with this surgery and focus my attention on rehabilitating my knee," Woods said in a statement on his Web site.

<snip>

++++++++++++

I doubt I could even WALK with all that going on in my leg - this guy played 91 holes of golf AND WON! :wow:

24. Someone on a sports channel said there are some sport djs that owe
Tiger an apology, saying he was "acting" that his knee was acting up. Boy, I bet they feel like schmucks.

Yeah, there is some tremendous torquing going on with a knee with a swing as strong as his.

25. I owe him an apology - I told Mr. Debi he was sandbagging and would come through with a florish
in the end. I was partly right, but did accuse him of using his injury to lay low until necessary. Boy, was I wrong. The guy was really hurting x(

19. As someone who does not golf (or even watch it) ...
... and admires Woods' incredible mastery of golf, I gotta say that even I was pulled in by the story of the U.S. Open playoff this year between Woods and Mediate. I'm guessing a lot of people took Monday off from work to watch it.

I wish Woods a full recovery. Then again, I suspect Woods would still dominate at 75% (or a pirate's wooden peg).
