Rep. warns of ‘consequences’ if Rove ‘laughs’ at subpoena

By David Edwards and Muriel Kane | Uncategorized | Wednesday, 18 June 2008

The House Judiciary Committee has written a letter to Karl Rove reminding him of a pending subpoena requiring his appearance on July 10 to answer allegations that he played a role in the prosecution of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman. Rove has not yet agreed to testify publicly and under oath.

MSNBC’s Dan Abrams asked Judiciary Committee member Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) whether Chairman John Conyers would follow through on his threat to have Rove arrested if he does not appear. “If that’s what it takes,” Wasserman Schultz replied. “We really cannot allow the co-equal branch of government, the legislative branch, to be trampled upon by the executive branch.”

Linda Sanchez (D-CA), also a member of the Judiciary Committee and the author of the latest letter to Rove, then joined Abrams. “We fully expect him to comply with the subpoena,” Sanchez stated. “I fully expect he won’t be there,” laughed Abrams. “Do you really believe that there’s even a tiny chance that Karl Rove is going to show up?”

In response, Sanchez cited “hopeful signs” that Rove might be willing to testify at least on the Siegelman affair, if not on the full scope of the politicization of the Justice Department. “And if it doesn’t happen, then we have to take the next step,” she stated, raising the possibility of the committee pursuing inherent contempt — the long-dormant ability of Congress to arrest and try people on its own.

1. I think they are going to have him in cuffs or under oath eventually.
Many on the Judiciary, now, have suggested that.

3. Of course he'll ignore the subpoena
They've sneered at every other attempt at getting them to testify or whatever and gotten away with it. Rove is not going to testify in front of Congress or anyone else. I hate being so cynical, but no one has held the criminals liable yet so there's no reason to think they will now.

16. There is no way that he will appear during the Bush** administration. Bush** will pardon him before
he leaves office.

5. The Founding Fathers took it for granted that the legislative
branch would be the strongest branch and keep the executive branch in check. Read the Federalist Papers 47-51.

6. This is turning into a joke.
Once again Kove acts like a bully and Congress hides in the corner.
I love the words "hopeful signs". Kinda says it all.

18. "has turned" would be more accurate, I think. Conyers has showed himself to be unwilling to do
any useful part of his job, which is truly saddening.

8. How many times have we thought that justice was just a hearing away?
How many members of this administration are paying for their crimes?

At least when Reagan was president there were indictments.

9. Yeah, we've seen this all before.
Anytime someone in this White House is hit with a subpoena, they give both fingers to whomever is serving it, and basically shove it up their ass with a candle on it. And they get away with it every time. Why would this time be any different?

I'll believe it when I see it.

But, the average Democratic Congressperson is much preferred over almost any Republican.
