McCain closes the cash gap with Obama
Source: Politico

For the first time in the campaign, Republican John McCain in May raised about the same amount of money, $22 million, as Democrat Barack Obama.

McCain also closed the gap in the amount of cash in the bank the two parties’ presumptive nominees have at their respective disposals as they enter the first phase of the general election.

McCain reported having about $32 million in cash for primary related expenses at the end of May.
Obama reported having $43 million in hand at the start of June—but about $10 million of that is dedicated to the general election.

Obama’s fundraising in May marked a sharp fall-off after months of record-breaking donations. Even in difficult times, such as when he suffered a key loss in Pennsylvania in April, Obama brought in a steady flow of cash that usually topped $30 million a month. . .

1. McCain, Helped by Republican Party, Has More Money Than Obama
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=askDEx2Ryy8I&refer=home

June 21 (Bloomberg) -- John McCain, who was outraised by a 2-1 margin by Barack Obama during the presidential primaries, entered June with almost as much money as the presumptive Democratic nominee.

When combined with the Republican National Committee's bank balance, McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, had more money to spend than Obama during the three months leading up to the national party conventions.

McCain, an Arizona senator, had $31.6 million as of May 31, compared with $33.3 million for Obama, Federal Election Commission records show. The RNC had $53.5 million to just under $4 million for the Democrats. The party committees act as shadow campaigns, concentrating their efforts on backing the presidential candidates.

Obama, 46, and Democratic fundraisers have turned their attention to filling the DNC's coffers now that the Illinois senator has secured the party's nomination. A fundraiser at Ethel Kennedy's Hickory Hill estate in Virginia earlier this week netted close to $6 million, and a May 31 event in New York City headlined by former Vice President Al Gore brought in around $1 million more.

2. This is to be Expected
after a much longer, more expensive Democratic primary season. In any other year, Obama being even with McCain would be taken as a sign of competitiveness.

10. I disagree. Dems fall in love, Repubs fall in line. Despite the MSM..
...espousing lies that the Repubs are disenchanted, we now see proof they aren't. They're robots and do as they're told even if it drives our country into the ground.

Nazi mentality is what's infested the Repukes so it's no surprise to me McCain's raised so much cash all of a sudden.

12. Republicans Generally Raise More Cash
and candidates in a short primary battle have several months to fund raise and husband their resources before the campaign begins in earnest.

Candidates in long primary battles are often financially spent by the time they are over. They not only have less time to fund raise, they generally start from a position of weakness.

That is why under most circumstances a tie would be desirable for someone in Obama's position. The fact that it isn't showshow much the expectations have changed and how well he has done up to now.

9. Obama raised as much money with a very divided party and race
Edited on Sat Jun-21-08 01:29 PM by NYC Liberal
as McCain did with a party that has had only 1 candidate for months now.

That doesn't sound too good for McCain.

Wait until the next count when the party has been united and Hillary supporters have gotten behind Obama.
