Democrats Rail Against Bush's Oil Policies (radio address)
Source: Associated Press

Democrats say opening more land to drilling is not the answer to high oil prices.

West Virginia Congressman Nick Rahall says America can't drill its way to energy independence.

(snip)
Rahall says a substantial amount of federal land is already available for exploration and drilling, but sits unused while the industry enjoys record profits.

He says Republicans seem more interested in continuing to line the pockets of big oil.

1. Ugh. Saying what we are NOT going to do is no solution to our problems.
When are Dems going to wise up?

2. I agree to a point.

I think there needs to be a clear repudiation of policy, but follow it up with a positive, simple and hopeful alternative.

We need to stimulate the economy AND free ourselves from oil slavery.

We need energy research on a national scale. Every major city will have an energy research center that explores every possible aspect of energy conservation and discovery. There will probably need to be regional specialization but each city needs to be responsible for its own solutions.

3. I agree. But all I hear is the no we can't...where is the yes we can?
We are still in reactionary mode. I'm not sure we are ready to produce the ideas needed to govern.

6. The solution is to hunt down the source of the breakdown in the speculation system and close the
door on the weasels that have artificially increased the price of oil. Once those people are eliminated, we can bring down the price by 25%-50%.

7. That's a good short-term solution, and very possible. But what about long-term?
Sure, there are large reserves of oil on this planet, and no doubt more still undiscovered (beneath the ocean floor, etc.), but no matter what the oil isn't gonna last forever. Societies of the future will have to be powered by other energy sources - wind, solar, hydrogen, nuclear, etc.
