7 bodies discovered in desert
Source: Arizona Daily Star

U.S. Border Patrol agents discovered seven bodies of suspected illegal immigrants in Arizona's desert from Friday through Sunday as the scorching summer heat raged on.
Nearly 60 others who were suffering from dehydration or lost were rescued.
Including Monday, temperatures in Southern Arizona have exceeded 105 degrees for nine straight days and exceeded 100 degrees for 10 consecutive days, said Bill Turnerof the National Weather Service. Saturday's high was 111 degrees and Friday's 109 degrees.
Agents found the bodies of two illegal immigrants Sunday, three Saturday and two on Friday, said Mike Scioli, Border Patrol Tucson Sector spokesman.
Sunday
At midnight Sunday, an agent came across a body about six miles east of the village of Newfield, about a mile from the U.S.-Mexican border on the Tohono O'odham Nation west of Tucson, Scioli said. It appeared as though the body had been there for several weeks, he said.

12. Mix sufficient quantities of desperation and ignorance
It's amazing what people will do.

17. One of them was hiking into a canyon.
They may have hit water if they got further up the hill.

6. "legalization" will never make crossing the Sonoran by foot a "safe" endeavor

7. "Legalization" would mean they don't have to sneak across the desert.
Show your green card to the man at the border.

8. What's preventing an immigrant from applying for and getting a green card now?
Besides bureaucratic red tape, of course.

9. The limit for Mexicans is something like 20,000, I think.
Our immigration law hasn't kept up with reality.

That's why I support(ed) comprehensive immigration reform.

10. There is absolutely no numerical limit to people from Mexico...
where did you hear this???? It's absolutely false (BTW: been working in the immigration law field for a decade).

16. Um, perhaps I was thinking of the immigration quota.
Are you saying anyone from Mexico who wants to come work here can? That doesn't seem to be the case, otherwise why are they sneaking through the desert?

18. There are no quotas for TN (Trade NAFTA) visa holders
for the rest of the categories that some Mexicans qualified there are quotas.

Family-based immigration categories have a limit of 226,000 annually.

Family 1st: unmarried sons and daughters of US citizens, any age. Since minor unmarried sons and daughters are immediate relatives, this in practice only applies to adults. The number is limited to 23,400.
Family 2nd: dependents of Green Card holders. This group is further subdivided into Family 2A (spouses and minor children) and Family 2B ( unmarried adult children). The number is limited to 114,200 (but this limit can be broken in certain cases). Of this number, 77% goes to Family 2A and 23% goes to Family 2B. In addition, Family 2A is partially exempt from the per-country quota.
Family 3rd: married sons and daughters of US citizens, any age. Note that there is no corresponding category for Green Card holders! The limit is 23,400
Family 4th: brothers and sisters of US citizens. The limit is 65,000.

For this category alone it could take a Mexican 10 to 30 years to get a permit to work in the US.
Check other requirements and limitations and for the big majority is almost impossible to emigrate legally.

11. Who said anything about that?
Clearly what was meant was that me make the system open to would-be immigrants so this sort of thing doesn't happen.

But then that would solve the problem and who wants that?

:sarcasm: <--that last comment was what is called sarcasm

13. But would make it an unnecessary endeavor.
It's done out of desperation, under current laws and practices - it's not an extreme sport.

5. Eh, they're just criminals comin' here to steal our jobs...
The Austin Lounge Lizards: 'Teenage Immigrant Welfare Mothers on Drugs' (1996):

It's been five years since we had a raise in pay
And they disallowed my business lunches today
Somebody must have changed the rules of the game
So we've found a convenient scapegoat we can blame

It's those teenage immigrant welfare mothers on drugs
(They're too lazy to work)
Teenage immigrant welfare mothers on drugs
(They're stealing our jobs)

Somebody ran this country deep into debt
I called up Congress, but nobody's called back yet
Sometimes I get so mad I can't think straight
We're looking for relief and it feels so great to hate

All those teenage immigrant welfare mothers on drugs
(They're on the Dole)
Teenage immigrant welfare mothers on drugs
(They're speaking espanol)

Who's to blame for the things we're so angry about?
Who's to blame for uprisings, downsizings, and the drought?
Who's to blame for the end of the good old days?
Who's to blame for that backwards-cap-wearing craze?

It's those teenage immigrant welfare mothers on drugs
(Let's build a thousand-mile fence)
Teenage immigrant welfare mothers on drugs
(It's just common sense)
Teenage immigrant welfare mothers on drugs
(Like the Berlin Wall)
Teenage immigrant welfare mothers on drugs
(Land mines and all!)
Teenage immigrant welfare mothers on drugs
