Swollen Mississippi defeats another levee

WINFIELD, Mo. - The swollen Mississippi River burst another levee Tuesday, submerging farmland and threatening a residential area whose occupants had already moved out in anticipation of a flood.

The levee failure near St. Charles comes as teams furiously fill sandbags to reinforce other waterlogged embankments guarding towns still waiting for the arrival of the huge river's flood crest.

Forecasters expect the last stretch of the bloated river to crest later this week.

The constant pressure of the river remains the primary concern in Lincoln County, where officials asked for volunteers Monday to help fill 50,000 sandbags to fortify the 2 1/2-mile-long Pin Oak levee, an earthen berm that was so waterlogged that it was like "walking on a waterbed," said county emergency management spokesman Andy Binder.

1. Gee I hope McCain is glad he voted against the Water Resources bill
that was five year too late. We need to remind votes that the Repubs to pay for tax cuts and Iraq blocked a water bill that included billions to shore up levees until 2007. Our party had to override Shrub's veto and McCain's opposition to get it through. I imagine that the folks along the rivers would have liked for that bill to have gone through in 2002 when they would have normally passed a water resources bill.

2. This is my county(St. Charles) and this shit is fucked up...
Harry S. Truman road is flooded, and so is parts of Ehlmann Road and Elm Point and most places north of my location. I'm just glad I live on a hill, we didn't have to sandbag around the house.
