Pelosi encourages extended debate on FISA compromise legislation
Source: USA Today

USA TODAY's Susan Page reports that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters this morning that it would be "healthy and wholesome" for Senate Democrats to force an extended debate over the compromise legislation on domestic surveillance, even if there is little chance that they can prevent its passage.

A provision in the FISA bill that effectively extends retroactive immunity to telecommunication companies that acceded to the Bush administration's requests for warrantless surveillance of American citizens is particularly controversial.

The House passed the legislation last week. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., is moving toward a Senate vote tomorrow.

Two Democratic senators -- Russ Feingold of Wisconsin and Christopher Dodd of Connecticut -- have indicated they might try to stall the bill. And last year, Barack Obama's campaign issued a statement saying he would support a filibuster of a bill that included retroactive immunity, though Obama now says he supports the compromise.

1. Gee, thanks Nancy. I called Boxer's office this morning but
they said there was no statement. That was disappointing.

2. What really irks me about her and her statement is that she's
not encouraged a damn thing. After she and her fellow crooks voted for this 'compromise', if it was such a raging success in their eyes, why was there not a word mentioned of it on The Gavel, her website of the goings-on in the House? She knew she pulled a fast one and there would be loads of us who would be furious. Debate my heiney; she would like nothing better than for all of this to get swept under the rug permanently.

Passed it on to the Senate. She needs to hear from us, she should not get away from this cleanly. We need to pounce on them on this.

13. Screw you, Nancy! You traitorous, P.O.S. You are the WORST DEM SPEAKER EVER.
You voted for the Bush Immunity Bill in the House, so your hollow recommendations to the Senate are a bullshit CYA move. We are paying attention. I can't wait until you are VOTED OUT OF OFFICE, you Benedict Arnold of our Constitutional Democracy.

21. Yeah because standing up to non-impeachment FISA Pelosi is EXACTLY like being a freeper...
...I understand WHY DU has that rule in place, but just because someone wants to support someone OTHER than an abject fucking enabler like Treasonous Pelosi doesn't make them a freeper...

22. The Democratic voters of her district chose her by an overwealming margin in the primary
I do agree, however, that some DUers opposing Pelosi are not Freepers. DUers should know better.

Blackmail is more reliable and cheaper. Especially when you have the NSA tapping every phone in the Capitol and turning it all over to Karl Rove.
