"We watch with sadness the continuing tragedy in Darfur. Nearer to home we had seen the outbreak of violence against fellow Africans in our own country and the tragic failure of leadership in our neighbouring Zimbabwe.

Only a short mention, but it's Mandela - no-one has more moral authority in the region.

Mandela speaks of 'failure of leadership' in Zimbabwe crisis
12 minutes ago

LONDON (AFP) — Former South African president Nelson Mandela spoke of a "tragic failure of leadership" in Zimbabwe during a celebrity fundraising dinner in London Wednesday to mark his 90th birthday.

In what are thought to be his first public comments on the situation, Mandela made a brief reference to Zimbabwe as he detailed a string of problems faced by the world.

"We look back at much human progress, but we sadly note so much failing as well," he said.

"In our time we spoke out on the situation in Palestine and Israel, and that conflict continues unabated. We warned against the invasion of Iraq, and observe the terrible suffering in that country.

"We watch with sadness the continuing tragedy in Darfur. Nearer to home, we had seen the outbreak of violence against fellow Africans in our own country and the tragic failure of leadership in our neighbouring Zimbabwe."

4. America will never move against Mugabe and he knows it.
We drill there for platinum. Hopefully
the whole of Africa will move towards a
peaceful solution.

2. I appreciate his measured words.
I am glad that he has not endorsed the calls for aggression against Zimbabwe. This situation can be resolved within the African community by Zimbabweans themselves. Diplomatic measures are fine so long as no one attempts to make Zimbabwe into another failed vassal of the West like Afghanistan or Iraq.

5. Finally!!
Only a short mention, but it's Mandela - no-one has more moral authority in the region.

Absolutely right. Mugabe has been able to deflect alot of condemnation from certain countries because he says that they're interested in "re-colonizing" Zimbabwe or that they're propping up the opposition as a "puppet regime."

Mandela, being a fellow freedom fighter, has alot of sway there. Why in the world did it take so long for him to say anything?? And where are the other African nations and the UN?? :banghead:
