E.coli in beef linked to 19 illnesses in Ohio
Michigan, Ohio E. coli outbreaks linked

Reuters
Wed Jun 25, 2008 3:00pm EDT

(Reuters) - A sample of raw ground beef was found to contain the same harmful strain of E.coli O157:H7 bacteria that caused outbreaks in Ohio and Michigan and sickened 19 in Ohio in recent weeks, the state's departments of health and agriculture said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Information submitted with the positive beef sample indicates the product was purchased at the Kroger Marketplace in Gahanna. It is important for consumers to realize beef purchased from other sources may also be tainted, and steps should be taken to protect themselves from foodborne illnesses," the statement said.

"The department is working closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to perform a trace back investigation to find the source of this ground beef," Ohio Department of Agriculture Director Robert Boggs said in the statement.

The Ohio Department of Health and local health departments in six counties continue to investigate 19 Ohio cases of E. coli O157:H7 that have been linked genetically and epidemiologically to cases in Michigan.

- And yet food inspector positions remain unfilled in a already terribly underfunded department. Peachy....

3. I don't think many....
..."Muricans" have noticed.

- And the few that have noticed, probably blame it on "The Clenis." Like everything else....

8. I'd like to see a bar diagram
By year with numbers of serious food-related illnesses by year. I think you'd see a huge rise starting in the year 2001.

5. What a load of crap!
I can cruise into any supermarket and roll the dice with CAFO meat but god forbid I try to buy meat from a small farmer who hasn't brought it to a FDA approved slaughterhouse.

I am so glad I've given up CAFO meat. I strongly encourage people to seek out local farmers and buy it direct. I get grass fed beef from a local farmer. The animals are treated humanely, the meat is much healthier and it tastes so much better. It is more expensive(I just eat less of it) but I can get sirloin steak for $6 a pound and CAFO beef is that much when it's not on sale. It would be even cheaper if he didn't have to cart it 5 hours away to get it processed at an "approved" slaughterhouse.

6. In my mind...what might have this to do with Rep Kucinich?
Keep his focus off introducing more articles of Impeachment by keeping him busy with the health of his constituents? O K it's a stretch, but I think Cheney and gang are that desperate.

we're a people that love to read scat stories.

Poopie In Beef Linked To 19 Illnesses In Ohio would certainly catch my eye on the front page. and for some people, "e.coli" just sounds too...sciencey. a lot of people gave that kind of reading up when they dropped out of high school.

just a thought.
