San Francisco May Name Sewage Treatment Plant After Bush
Source: International Herald Tribune

SAN FRANCISCO: Reagan has his highways. Lincoln has his memorial. Washington has the capital, and a state, too. But President George W. Bush may soon be the sole president to have a memorial named after him that you can contribute to from the bathroom.

From the Department of Damned-With-Faint-Praise, a group going by the regal-sounding name of the Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco is planning to ask voters here to change the name of a prize-winning water-treatment plant on the shoreline to the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.

The plan - hatched, naturally, in a bar - would place a vote on the November ballot to provide "an appropriate honor for a truly unique president."

6. I'm not sure this is a good idea.
We all know that anything that w touches turns to poop. I'm afraid that if this plant is renamed for w, the prize-winning water-treatment plant will turn to poop rather than just treating it.

Should name a sewage generating plant after him, because that's what he is.

I think a horribly overflowing landfill would be far more apt.

Having something that takes crap and waste and renders it harmless and even safe to drink named after you is actually kind of a compliment.

13. But only "kind of" a compliment
I say they do it. It's as close as we'll ever get to telling him how we truly feel.

Waste of taxpayer dollars and government time? Probably. But oh so worth it....

14. But..
what about the children? What will they think when they see the glorious, illustrious, wordsmith - George W. Bush - ridiculed by a major US city for being the shittiest stain in the history of the white house?

I'm just concerned that within weeks of being renamed, everything about the plant will start falling apart, poop will run amok, and the city will wish it never invited such a foul thing to be done!

Quite honestly - what did the shit do to deserve this?

16. This Was Just the Sort of Thing...
...I was thinking someone ought to do for Reagan, back when they were trying to get HIS name on something in every state. Is that effort still underway?

The sad thing is, I could see some nutjob mounting the same sort of campaign for our current Illustrious Leader in about twenty years. It just seems the sort of thing that happens when somebody with more money than sense decides their personal favorite isn't being sufficiently worshipped.

Best to get a jump on 'em, eh?

17. Funny Idea, BAD precedent
How about the Jimmy Carter Communist museum, the Barack Obama 'Center for Black Power'. It could all be done. This is a very 'low-road' idea, and would backfire for sure.

23. :-)
The problem I see is that San Franciscans, who up until now never gave a crap about Bush, will be forced to admit that they do, really give a crap about him. It's pretty much how a majority of us think of the imbecile-in-chief.

Hoo boy, what bullshit we can then contribute in his memory!!

24. Instead of an award-winning sewage treatment plant...
they should name a toxic Superfund clean-up site after him. The GWB Toxic Landfill or something. We need more award-winning sewage treatment plants! I did rec this, however, because it made me chuckle.

32. totally inappropriate: sewage treatment plants are a Good Thing
Sewers and sewage treatment facilities provide important public services that most of us would prefer to have. As such, they are diametrically opposed to bush and everything he and the GOP stand for. Naming a sewage treatment facility after bush associates his reign with a cleansing of fecal matter and other pollutants from the water cycle, which would be absolutely ludicrous.

If anything must be so memorialized, name a landfill or toxic waste dump after him. I can think of no fitter metaphor for his administration than a vast repository of useless (and dangerous) corrupting garbage.

34. Ridiculous infantile stupidity ...
How does the progressive movement expect to be taken seriously with this type of nonsense? We let the Iraq war go on, we allow "detainees" to be tortured by our CIA, we let * steal TWO elections, we take impeachment off the table, we surrender on FISA, etc. We SURRENDER every fight in Congress and the Senate ... and then celebrate nonsensical pranks and symbolic tripe as if its useful.

This crap is precisely why we lose, and why we will continue to lose! We engage in childish symbolic gestures and Animal House bullshit, that does nothing but make us look like a whining group of college kids, while conservatives implement ACTUAL neo-conservative policies. They take this process seriously, and we rename a sewage treatment plant. They torture detainees ... and we dress in pink and carry signs. They invade innocent countries ... and we hold "die-ins".

This nonsensical garbage is neither funny nor useful -- we need to be holding a serious debate on the issues. We need to be calling conservatives on the carpet. These "potty-jokes" make us look positively infantile!

This does not reflect well on the progressive movement AT ALL. I don't see this convincing ANYONE that progressives are prepared to lead the country in serious times. It merely convinces people that we're a movement unworthy of being taken seriously.
