T. Boone Pickens Says No Deal on Swift Boat Bounty
Source: NYT

T. Boone Pickens is not giving up his million dollars.

That’s how much he had offered to pay anyone who could disprove any of the accusations the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth made against Senator John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election – attacks Mr. Pickens, the billionaire Texas oilman, helped finance.

A group of Swift boat veterans sympathetic to Mr. Kerry sent Mr. Pickens a letter last week taking him up on the challenge. In 12 pages, plus a 42-page attachment of military records and other documents, they identified not just one but ten lies in the group’s campaign against Mr. Kerry. They offered to meet with him to provide Mr. Kerry’s journals and videotapes from Vietnam and a copy of his full military record certified by the Navy – a key demand of Mr. Pickens and veterans who believe Mr. Kerry lied about his service to win his military decorations.

Mr. Pickens replied with a one-page letter, thanking the veterans for their research and their service, but politely saying there had been a misunderstanding. “Key aspects of my offer of $1 million have not been accurately reported,” he wrote.

(snip)

In his letter, Mr. Pickens explained that his bet actually applied to only the television ads the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth bought, and not to their bestselling book or the media interviews that generated more attention than the ads themselves.

6. Picken's should be forced to give up the money. He keeps changing the his requirements,
but the only one that counts is the first challenge he made to Senator Kerry. Now he doesn't want to play fair because he knows he is wrong and a liar who supported other liars. The cheap bastard needs to fork over the money- he lost the bet.

He never lived in the country and is afraid of horses. He's a Highland Park kind of guy. Saw where he was moving there after the election. Limos and restricted country clubs, that's him. He'll be grateful to get to stop playing cowboy; the boots chafe his delicate feet.

When I hear T. Boone Pickins, I think of the term Greenmail. I believe it was coined just for him.

As in, "Give me the green (money, money, money, and more money), or I'll take over your company, strip it clean, and leave it to die in the desert..."

9. If his words were broadcast over any media the FCC has jurisdiction over. It's a binding contract.
He is obligated to the terms broadcasted. He cannot redefine terms later. If Oprah says on air, Everybody in the audience is getting a new car. She MUST buy everyone in the audience a new car. If she does not. They can sue her. If your local smartass DJ says even as smartass retort you win a new car. He has to give you a new car.

They can also use the proof that SwiftBoat veterans lied to sue them for libel. They might get awarded far more than 1 million if they do.

84. Verbal contracts are usually deemed to be in the air and only enforceable as long as neither party
disputes the validity of the verbal agreement. But when the verbal contract is preserved in a medium for future examination. It takes on the solidity of a written instrument. A video will is every bit as legal and enforceable as a written will.

Edited on Thu Jun-26-08 08:08 AM by VogonGlory
T. Boone Pickens, Commodore of the Weasel-Boat Fleet. T. Boone's challenge has been met and he chose to weasel out of the deal.

On the other hand, maybe I'm being too hard on him. Maybe he'll need the money to set up residence abroad when a Democratic presidential administration starts investigating the sleazy campaign administration of the incumbent crew and finds tons of evidence not only for indictment, but also successful prosecution.

Will T. Boone Pickens turn into a Taco Bell (tm) Republican and "run for the border" when a post-Shrub Justice Department starts doing its job? Stay tuned.

58. Go to DUs Research Forum thread on swifts - Kerry's allies were DENIED AIRTIME by networks
Edited on Thu Jun-26-08 10:18 AM by blm
and one of the early swifts even wanted to declare he had been lied to by swifts and wanted to publicly recant and set the record straight, but news channels were no longer interested in giving him airtime once he switched sides.

Read through that thread and it becomes apparent that corpmedia was complicit - just as Dan Rather admitted last year, the corpmedia needed to protect Bush for the favorable FCC rulings they expected in a Bush second term.

then for the favorable rulings they expected in a Bush second term. And McClellan's book tour where he validates the perception that media let Bush and the WH off the hook throughout that time.

89. They went all over the country for Kerry
They were incredible and they went on some of the cable shows. It was incredibly hard on them to hear and see the attacks. they were not politicians or people used to being attacked - which they were.

I know one person who met a couple of them in NH. From what she said they were extremely convincing and they loved Kerry.

But, asking why the media didn't highlight the guys actually there - over the ones provably not there - they gave scant coverage to John Kerry's own response. It got far less coverage the day it was made itself than the SB liars did.

It was a media blessed character assassination. Think of that. Kerry, blessed with connections to everyone, intelligence, and family, fiancee and friends who loved him risked his life for his country in a mission that was beyond screwed up. He spoke up in Vietnam and spoke up to his new officer as soon as he returned (Tour of Duty) But, with Pickens, it wasn't even speaking out on Vietnam that motivated him - it was greed. It has as much to do with oil as it did with Vietnam.

Why did the media do it - who knows? But, it is a sad way to repay a good young man who volunteered to serve and did so with honor and distinction.

some people about the lies and deception this administration and its allies perpetuated the past 8 years. Hell from the Department of Justice, Iraq, Economy, Walter Reed, Veterans Benefits, WTF more do the people of this country want.

The thing about this with what they did to Kerry is organizations such as The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars went along with it. Those organizations are not out there benefiting or helping our soldiers. It is some old neo-con organziations any more.

54. Truth be told: Lies work much better than facts
The 2004 swift boating lies and the free media publicity that ensued provided the margin of victory in the last presidential election, courtesy of Pickens and his band of liars. I'm sure Pickens is a "forward thinking" individual who would much rather spend $1 million on another round of slanderous attack ads against Obama, as opposed to keeping his word. At least he's consistent -- he willfully backs up the lies of others, in addition to his own lies.

He'd rather spend a $1 million on defending a lawsuit against himself than to give it to a LIBERAL cause!

66. Pickens has NEVER been known as a man of his word. NEVER!
Jesus Christ could present the evidence with a Heavenly Host singing backup and Pickens would find some way to worm out of his deal. Pickens will NEVER honor his arrangement, simply because he does not win. The man is NOT TRUSTWORTHY, nor is he fair and honest. And it's not because he's Texan, it's because he's a dishonest asshole and blowhard that just happens to be from Texas.

“Key aspects of my offer of $1 million have not been accurately reported,” he wrote. Yeah, key aspects like "I never intended to honor my offer." For rethuglican liars like Pickens, it's not about telling the truth, it's about perpetuating the lie. He knows full and well that the Swift Boat Liars are politically motivated and, well, LIARS. Pickens is one also. A LIAR.
