100 quake dogs rescued by Chinese woman
Source: MSNBC

CHENGDU, China - The white short-haired mutt was found dragging his crushed hind legs through rubble-clogged streets after the massive earthquake devastated China's Sichuan province.

The shy terrier mix was lucky to live through the May 12 quake that killed nearly 70,000 people. He was even more fortunate to survive the squads of police and soldiers who were gunning down homeless canines for fear they would spread disease in the disaster's aftermath.

But his luckiest day was when he was picked up by Chen Yunlian.

Now he's among some 100 "quake dogs" rescued by the former businesswoman, who has created something extremely rare in China: a private animal shelter.

2. What a great article!
That bottom photo is priceless--it's probably rare in the US for stray dogs who only have two working legs to be saved and nurtured. I know a few people who have these kinds of "wheelchairs" for their dogs; the dogs were healthy when they got them and they had some kind of accident. But I've never seen a handicapped dog in a shelter. Bless this woman!

3. It's all about balance...
...I know it's difficult, on a daily basis, to look at war and misery and all of the other things we have in our world and remember that there are still people like this woman, doing what their mind and heart and conscience and tell them to do...

...but there are.

4. I heard a lot of criticism of people rescuing pets
after Katrina. "So many suffering people, why don't they do something for them?" To men, there are two answers to that question: 1) There's enough suffering to go around on this planet, any compassion given any living creature is worthwhile; and 2) Karma.

There you go.

I used to think the ending of _Double Star_ was kinda cheesy - then I got older and realized it was the answer:

"There is solemn satisfaction in doing the best you can for eight billion people. Perhaps their lives have no cosmic significance, but they have feelings. They can hurt."

While I'm at it:

"Sin lies only in hurting other people unnecessarily. All other "sins" are invented nonsense. Hurting yourself is not sinful--just stupid."

Yes, I'm a bleeding heart liberal Heinlein fan. Also a Chen Yunlian fan.
