NY policeman charged after woman body-slammed
Source: Associated Press

NEW YORK - A police officer who body-slammed an unarmed woman and broke her jaw during a medical call to a suburban restaurant last year was arrested Friday and charged with civil rights violations.

Federal prosecutors said Yonkers officer Wayne Simoes used excessive force when he grabbed the woman by the waist, hoisted her in the air and slammed her, face first, into a tile floor.

The takedown, recorded March 3, 2007, by security cameras, knocked Irma Marquez unconscious and put her in the hospital for four days. At the time, authorities said the officer was trying to keep her from interfering with emergency medical technicians summoned to the restaurant to assist her niece, who had been hit in the head with a bottle.

I can't believe the asshole mayor of that town stuck up for the ultra-corrupt police department.

I've known too many personally. Very few believe that -- it's just what they say in the interview.

6. the courts
Have always held that the police have no legal duty or obligation to protect or defend private citizens..... They are in fact historians as they can or will usually do nothing until after the fact , then they go to the scene of the crime and write a report as to what happened....in my experience a good percentage of them are macho, power hungry assholes..

protect and defend private citizens. How about just not severely injuring and hospitalizing them?

5. I remember when cops used to be nice guys.
They SUCK now. The other day I asked a cop to help me. He told me he was busy and I should call 911.
When the 911 cops arrived, the two "boys" were young enough to be my sons. There was an "alpha" cop and a "beta".
The "alpha" cop gave me a lecture about what I "SHOULD'VE" done to avoid the situation.
He was so arrogant, I just said, "okay, so you're not going to help me".
I got back in my car and went home.
F*K them, and F*K their tasers too!

48. I can see the police doing this where I am living. In fact we had an
"incident" 2 weeks ago downtown, but fortunately a bystander videoed the whole thing. Cops are vicious liars for the most part, imo. Too many bad things happening to ordinary people. We have had other disgraceful happenings here, performed by our local police force.

9. While I am a very firm believer in Police and Law and Order
There is something to be said about a person's mentality that wants to spend their life actually "looking for trouble". IMO most that want to spend their life that way are covert bullies that actually enjoy causing people pain.

33. I think that's a misread, pattmarty
I had to reread the post several times, but I believe Bandit was making the point that becoming a cop means signing on for a job where you are looking for trouble. Bandit's making the point that it requires a specific mind-set to want that.

He concludes by saying that folks with that mind set are by nature bullies and take the job because they like to cause pain.

27. We have to change the whole
cops can do no wrong and should not be held to same standards bullshit mentality.

It is never pretty when a cop gets thrown into the general population of a large penitentiary, but until enough end up there for the crimes they are getting away with now, nothing will change.

Tasers = torture without the guilt of being primitive.

it looked like she was pushing him away but it's a stretch to say she struck him. Are you saying she got what she deserved? The National Black Police Officer Association sure as hell don't think so, they call it what it is police brutality.

20. Pigs
I think that only sick people want to be cops.
Little Bullies dream of being cops when they grow up.
Little Heroes sign up to be firemen. You ever hear of firemen doing this kind of thing?
I get very tired of hearing the police described as heroes. About 1% of them are. The rest are sick

The first thing they should do is automatically disqualify anyone who applies to be a cop. They should tear up their applications, and send them to a head shrink.
Wanting to be a cop, like torturing animals, is a serious sign of personality disorder.

How can they ever make things right for that poor woman?

It probably gave him a woodie when he did her. He probably shudders with pleasure and drools a little as he remembers it. Getting paid to beat up on women? Best day on the job ever. He probably goes home and mistreats his wife, children and pets.

He probably gets a fat salary while the rest of us lose our homes.

I've known a lot of cops. They are about as normal as criminals.

31. Cops should be drafted
Eighteen and nineteen year old high school graduates, who are not in college full-time should make up the selection pool. There should be tests to weed out the illiterate, the unbalanced, and the physically unfit. They should be trained as community helpers first, and as they exhibit more of the good qualities wanted in a police force, they should be advanced in the ranks.

They only problem with implementing such a scheme is that there are very few positive role models and plenty in the ranks who should have been purged a long time ago.

Edited on Sun Jun-29-08 06:29 PM by LeftyMom
It's one thing to create an incentive program (ie more financial aid in exchange for some useful service) but quite another to simply demand control of their lives for several years. The very concept is shamelessly authoritarian.
