Bush seeks sanctions on Zimbabwe after election
Source: Yahoo News

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush on Saturday said he was seeking U.S. sanctions against the "illegitimate" government of Zimbabwe, calling Friday's election by President Robert Mugabe's government a "sham."

"Given the Mugabe regime's blatant disregard for the Zimbabwean people's democratic will and human rights, I am instructing the secretaries of State and Treasury to develop sanctions against this illegitimate government of Zimbabwe and those who support it," Bush said in a statement.

He also said he would press for U.N. action, including an arms embargo.

10. Sanctions my ass. What a crock! "Sanctions" mean we will do
nothing while posturing to do something. Bush is as bad a Mugabe. Why wasn't his election sanctioned?

13. The US should have had sanctions after 2000 and 2004
we have no bidness telling anyone how to run elections, not even Zimbabwe as extreme as that sounds.

15. New US sanctions may come in two weeks:

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe attends the opening of the 11th African Union Summit in the Sinai resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt. The United States may be ready to announce new US diplomatic and economic sanctions on Mugabe and his regime in "a week or two," White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Monday.
