Conservatives Ready To Battle McCain on Convention Platform

Conservative activists are preparing to do battle with allies of Sen. John McCain in advance of September's Republican National Convention, hoping to prevent his views on global warming, immigration, stem cell research and campaign finance from becoming enshrined in the party's official declaration of principles.

McCain has not yet signaled the changes he plans to make in the GOP platform, but many conservatives say they fear wholesale revisions could emerge as candidate McCain seeks to put his stamp on a document that currently reflects the policies and principles of President Bush.

"There is just no way that you can avoid anticipating what is going to come. Everyone is aware that McCain is different on these issues," said Jessica Echard, executive director of the conservative Eagle Forum. "We're all kind of waiting with anticipation because we just don't know how he's going to thread this needle."

McCain has spent the past year and a half trying to straddle the philosophical schism in the modern Republican Party. In primaries, he stressed his conservative credentials, but since clinching the nomination he has often reminded voters of his more moderate stances while professing his fealty to conservative positions.

1. They mean McCain with the 3% lifetime environmental voting record?
Doing the right thing even 3% of the time is too radical for the Repukes?

Give me a fucking break.

If McCain is a Maverick, I'm fucking Ghandi.

2. This would be great except...
The Right Wing "Mainstream" Media won't cover it. Nobody will hear of the global warming denial and ignorance of the Right. Nobody will hear of dissent amongst Republicans.

But you bet your ass they'll find a few PUMA members and try like hell to exploit a non-existent rift between Hillary Supporters and Obama Supporters at the Convention to make it into a chaos it is not.

3. McSame
If he straddles any harder, he will split up the middle. Well, we can hope can't we? somehow, I can't see him being on the rethug ticket. someway, somehow, they will realize they can't win with him. Or maybe not.

4. If you're more conservative than McCain to begin with, you're already well
off the chart, IMO.

As for whatever tension there still exists that McCain has not pandered away between now and Minneapolis, well, here's hoping they claw the flesh off each others' bones on the convention stage and that Norm Coleman is arrested in the ruckus and hauled off to jail.

5. All irony aside.... this is good news....
If it materializes, it is sure to help neutralize any post-convention bounce. Remember G.H.W. Bush's convention in 1992 and the rabid right-wing take-over of what had been (particularly compared to junior) a relatively milk-toast conservative candidate? I'd love a repeat.

6. The "maverick" will say whatever he needs to say to anybody,
McSame is just another whore looking out for his pimps, Unfortunately, his pimps aren't that sure about the results whether or not he is "elected."

Plus, I don't think we want or can afford a presidential diaper. Grandpa does not offer any change.

Obama doesn't seem that he will do much either as he moves to the center, but I hope that we can hold his feet to the fire with a progressive congress. Obama is the best choice for the next four years.

7. Ironically, this could help McSame make his case for change
Nothing like Bush supporters railing on the nominee to give the corporate media fodder to promote the Maverick narrative.

8. This just shows how radically to the right the Republican party has shifted.
Yet, the media gerbils will barely acknowledge this and focus all of its attention on anything that even has the whiff of dissension in the Democratic party.

10. McCain needs to have the credentials committee refuse to accept any of their Super Delegates.
The Republican Super Delegates have the power due to their elected positions of forcing anything they want on their nominee. Super Delegates have the ability to caucus whenever they need especially when most of them are in Congress.

But barring the Super Delegates won't happen.

The pledged delegates in most cases are either local activists or local party officials. The amount of input they can provide is very very limited. Unless they have been involved in party politics for a long time.

11. Sounds like there's going to be violence and riots at the RNC
They'd better call in several thousand extra cops, riot control and SWAT Teams.

These people are wild-eyed radicals.
