Bush, Blair Among Nobel Nominees as Deadline Looms
Edited on Fri Jan-30-04 08:52 AM by Jazzgirl
Unbelievable!

<snip>
Edit: Forgot to post link I was so dumbfounded!

OSLO (Reuters) - President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair are among nominees for the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize before a Sunday deadline for nominations despite failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

"Nominations are pouring in," said Geir Lundestad, director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute. He said he gets letters and up to 1,500 e-mails a day from people either supporting or denouncing candidates.

"Bush and Blair definitely still deserve it," said Jan Simonsen, a right-wing independent member of Norway's parliament who nominated the two for the 2004 prize shortly after the U.S.-led war toppled Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in April.

"Even though they haven't found those weapons they got rid of a dictator and made the world more safe," he told Reuters on Friday, sticking by the choice. "They got rid of a madman."

I'm having a really hard time believing these two stand any chance of winning a Nobel Prize!

Of course, that's almost everyone in the world, so it's a pretty safe bet.

5. After the reich wing castigated Jimmy Carter for winning the Nobel
and saying that it was a meaningless award from leftist tree huggers, it will be nauseating to listen to them use this as confirmation for the first strike policy of aggression, and gloat about what a marvelous leader the shrub is.

If they are seriously being considered and if the unthinkable happens, the only words that come to mind are the last words of Orwell's 1984... "I love Big Brother"

A strange thing happened when David Johnson, the US embassy's Ministerial spokesman addressed the Royal Institute of International Affairs in Chatham House last week.

The distinguished diplomat was barracked.

Chatham House is the epicentre of the British establishment, as famed for its associations with the security services as for its gentlemanly rules of press access. An autographed portrait of the Queen hangs in its oak-panelled entrance.

10. This yahoo always nominates them. No chance.
Jimmy Carter got it because he obviously deserved it and at least one of the committee members said it was meant as a slap in the face to Bush.

This shows that radical idealogue right winger know no borders.

People who MAKE war don't get the Peace Prize.

There's no reason to be shocked. As the article points out, Simonsen is a right wing moron who nominates these two thugs for the Prize every year. He just wastes people's time and provides a little unintentional levity in so doing.

24. Email the Nobel Committee and protest
Edited on Fri Jan-30-04 10:42 AM by Angel_O_Peace
State why Bush or Blair should NOT be even considered for the prize...there are so many reasons: Thouands dead, global destabilzation both politically and economically, the push to create more nuclear arms in the US, the lies told to the world to justify invading a soverreign nation...and am sure there are many more.

And when you do write, maybe consider and name who you think should receive the prize.

Here's all the contact information for the committee:

29. Done, thank you Angel for the contact information
I am so saddened by this news. As an American citizen I am ashamed that George W. Bush is leader of my country. He is not a champion of world peace, nor is he a representative of common good for world citizens. During his tenure he has neglected globally critical environmental treaties, strained international relations with his ill-conceived "Axis of Evil" speeches, slain tens of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians in his effort to wage a pre-emptive, unilateral war. His divisive policies have splintered any respect that the U.S. may have enjoyed during the Clinton Era. The U.S. is a laughing stock, and deservedly so, with its attitudes of disdain, impudence, and unearned pride exemplified unashamedly in its President.

The world has many examples of leaders and common people more deserving of such an honor as the Nobel Peace Prize. I hope that the Decision Committee can find them, bring them to light, and reward them justly with such a prestigious award. George W. Bush is entirely undeserving.

Thank you,

Phoenix, Arizona USA

36. thank you!!! DONE!!!!
Hello,

As an American citizen, I urge you to reconsider the nomination of George W. Bush for the Peace prize. His strike-first policy of pre-emptive war, and his invasion and corporate privatization of Iraq, are embarassments to our country, and winning a prize such as this will grant a legitimacy to these insane ideas. We will be having a hard enough time getting our country and our democracy back this year, without the added burden of global approval.

Many thanks and regards,
Matt Hairfield

33. Done, and here is the text of what I sent...
Esteemed members of the Nobel Committee,
It has recently been announced that US President George Bush
and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair have been nominated for the
Peace Prize awarded by your organization. Please allow me to
offer my perspective on these nominations. I have long held the view
that the recipient of such an award should demonstrate true
courage, devotion to humanity, and statesmanship which
transcends self interests. I find these nominations to be capricious
at best, and am frankly surprised to find that these two individuals
are even being considered. I would respectfully challenge the
nominations on the basis of the spirit of the award, which is
intended to reward those who strive for global peace and the
altruistic treatment of the global community. Neither of these men
have done anything that could even remotely be considered worthy
of the Peace Prize, their motives rather trending toward the
fulfillment of self interests and global, oligarchical, and plutocratic domination. I implore you, as a citizen of the global human community, to ignore political influences and vote against these capricious nominations. Let the spirit of Alfred Nobel rest easy in the knowledge that imposters have no place of honor in his house.
Sincerely, XXXXXXXXXXXXX

Then the Nobel Peace Prize will no longer really have any meaning, at least not the meaning it was intended for.

ps: anyone that nominated these slaughterers of innocents gives me concern for this and future generations.
